Any used Hertz for US car hire booking?

Hello. Planning a big road trip later this year from San Francisco to Yellowstone via Yosemite, Monument Valley, etc. Spent the last hour or so going through some quotes and Herz seems to be the cheapest and also charges the lowest one-way fee ($300 vs most others of between $500-750)

I see that they offer 2 rates - one flexible which you pay when you pick the car up and then a pre-pay online rate which is about £100 cheaper. Will probably go for this once the flight is booked and confident I will not need to change details.

Anyway bit of a question about the booking and the t&c. Say for example the total rate is £625. Its says it will charge the card £414 upon booking, and I assume the balance is paid when the car is picked up. This difference equates to the $300 one-way fee. However just worried as this appears under what they call 'additional items total included in total approx charge' and they also 'estimates mileage' (which seems odd as at the top of the quote it states unlimited mileage) and then also a 'miscellaneous location fee may apply at counter'. Against each of these is £0.00, but just concerned we get there and suddenly this has jumped up.

Anyone booked before with Hertz who has experience to calm my fears?

havent used hertz but prefer to book via a broker as you used get better cover, the prepay rates are what you need or you will be hit with the insurance when you get there and these can add up to be more expensive. have a look at carhire3000 they had rates about 3 weeks ago which were over a £100 cheaper than elsewhere and if you call them they can give you better rates. one way drop offs are quite expensive and sometimes you need to pay for them locally.

think carhire3000 also let you pay a deposit or at least make changes in case your plans change. Also might be worth looking at Alamo they let you choose the car you want rather than having one assigned.

Totally agree about a broker. It's worth do a price comparison and then phoning a broker.

When I looked at CarHire3000 last year for 2 week SUV hire from Seattle to San Diego they quoted 240 UKP, but with a hefty one way charge. By phoning they were able to find me a slightly higher priced car with one way included. I didn't actually book with them in the end but it shows that it's not always best just to look at the internet rate.

We did the same with CH3000 but emailed them instead of calling - booked the car, sent an email straight away asking if there was a one-way fee as it says they will let you know, but we weren't sure how long that would take...got a reply back that there was but for £12 more they would switch us to another company without a one-way fee. Because CH3000 deal with a number of rental companies they can see if they can find a better deal to suit your specific circumstances.

I am surprised that Hertz is the cheapest. Do you have a corporate discount code? Where is the drop point?
