Q: What should the resulting disc look like when opened under Windows? A: If you see one ISO file on the CD or DVD then you burnt the disc wrong. You should see an entire file structure on the disc. This may vary somewhat for different versions of Knoppix, but for the 5.0.1 CD version there would be a boot folder with files in it, a Knoppix folder with files in it, several autorun files, a cdrom.ico icon file and an index.html file.

    Oops!

My fault for not making myself clear enough, but you just use the 'write image file to disk' option in imgburn and it will sort the rest out automatically for you.
  • So I've burnt the ubuntu iso, selected 'Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer' and it's hung. HDD constantly on, left for 5 minutes. Duff CD? Am I missing something?
  • Dodge CD. F***ing Tesco's!

try burning it on a lower speed setting.

I've had many bad burns of windows & Linux cds (more windows than linux though) due to faster write speeds

    Hi
The Ubuntu iso is 'big'. It only just fits on a cd.
    This has caused some problems.
    The solutions are:-
    Check md5 sum before burning.
    Use good media.
    Do a slow burn.
    Set burner program to 'overburn'.

I don't know whether these are actual solutions, or whether it's just hit and miss.
To be honest, I never got a Ubuntu 9.10 live cd to load. But it wasn't a problem because I chose to do a 'minimal install' from a different (only 20MB) image.
If you just want a live cd to play with then Mint 8 is OK. I have that burned on a cd and it loads just fine. I've just tested it again and it does access ntfs drives. I can peek and poke into my pc and copy and paste stuff from my Ubuntu partition into my windows 2000 partition.
    Mint is based on Ubuntu.
    Mint 8 is here:-http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=44

  • Cheers guys. It's a bad batch of CDs. All duff. Ubuntu is working a treat at the moment so I'm happy. Or should that be the guy who's laptop is it should be happy!
