This thread just shows how wide the gap is between those who live in the country and those who live in the town. A completely different attitude on using the resources available (what MSE is all about), and showing jealousness (by accusing people of theft withot knowing the facts) when they are not able to access a form of heat much cheaper than gas or electricity.

I completely agree. Rural country areas tend to have their own 'ways' which will be the generally accepted 'norm' within the area.

Certainly fallen or discarded wood in my neck of the woods is left deliberately for people's use.

When trees are felled deliberately or branches cut for safety reasons, the wood is left for a period and if no-one has taken it, it will then be lifted and chipped.

I'll come and remove your car then - it was obviously deliberately left for peoples use.

doesn't matter what it is, it's still theft. Sure not likely to have someone coming after you for taking some wood., but they can.

If anyone was that bothered about the wood being stolen they would have taken it away as they cut it. It's a given in the countryside that any wood left by a hedgerow will be gone within a few days of being cut. Within the boundary of a field would be a different matter (that would be considered theft).

What a lovely welcome for a new poster to the site.

OP, well done on this imaginative way to reduce your bills. Better use up old wood that would otherwise rot by the side of the road than use up valuable electricity.

  • Well i live in the country, and our council does leave big piles of road salt for people to use by the side of the road, only its usually too late when i need it, i cant get to it, like today!! And yes there is wood and logs left for people use, many people cut back their tree branches and leave them for people to help themselves. Maybe it isnt all within the "rules", but its accepted round here. I used to live in a city and i wouldnt have taken wood from anywhere but then i didnt need a fire in the city had Gas!

As it has been explained ( more then once ) it isnt theft , the council are more then happy for you to collect it ......why don't you phone them and ask ?

I wonder what your other usernames are?

I have just the one thanks - and I also live in the country, and surrounded by woodland.

how do you know the council are happy for you to take it? Have you asked?
    Do you ask every time?
Also it may not belong to the council anyway, you have no idea where it came from.

So many assumptions been made. It be a great place to live in if we all just took something because it looked discarded or left by the side of the road.
Lets all get wood burning stoves and lets burn everything we find.

You obviously do not understand how night storage heating works, they are turned on in the autumn as it starts to get colder, they then click into life when the economy7 meter cuts in at midnight, they then suck the electric for 7 hours until the circuit is turned off, the heat then drifts out slowly during the day.

I think I am pretty well informed on how night storage heating works considering I live in a house that has night storage heating! Our storage heater circuit is turned off at the circuit breaker so they don't come on at all.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
