You accusing me of Theft now, best you phone the Police.

Are you, or are you not taking wood without permission?

If there was a pile of road salt by the road, would you also take that?

How about the nice signposts? Nice bit of metal there, surely that would fit in the back of the car?

I'm sure the landowner from a local wood would have no problem with you taking fallen dead wood. However it should be removed from a varied area. Rotting wood is required to maintain the environment and lifecycle of the trees and animals that depend on fallen material.

Hence why we can't all start using wood burners, there would be no trees left!
however glad it has worked for you, just check where you get the wood from.

So probably best to leave it where it is so it can just rot or get tangled up with passing traffic, you are obviously rich enough not to have to do such things just to survive.
Oh to be Rich like yourself.
paying £160pm certainly does not put you in the poor category, you might not like what was said but at least you now know it is potentially theft

I've never seen enough wood lying by the side of the road to heat my home, are there a lot of storms in your area or have beavers moved in ??
  • No I would not take salt or signs though there are plenty around here that would.
All my timber is sourced from area's that I have been given permission to use, this includes 100 acres of farm land, 20 acres of NT land, I have bartered for one trailer load, even the local Highways foreman knows I clear up fallen timber usually saving his men a job.
What got me with this thread was that it was quickly concluded that I was a THIEF, I do not take lightly to such accusations from complete strangers.
BTW, I leave about 20% of fallen timber for the wildlife, owing to me personally we now have Stag Beetles back on the farm I keep an eye on.

I agree with the OP, very negative comments in this thread.

    No, constructive.

"Looking for wood by the roadside" does imply no permission.
    This was pointed out.

Then the OP never confirmed they had permission, but instead counter argued and accused others to be all so mighty because they are rich.
Then said they didn't like the negative comments, and still didn't clear up if was taken with permission.
Only when asked directly was the information volunteered!

No wonder arguments start on here. Constructive comments for the OP and others reading are just thrown right back and others jump in with little stories!
  • I'm with clothahump here! Some people are so negative and are just out looking for an arguement. Don't let them wind you up. There are plenty more people on here who think good on you for taking the initative, sorting out you electricity and saving yourself hundreds of pounds in the process. Clothahump is getting wood that has clearly been disguarded and is not a thief.

Anyway, Clothahump I think you are better off posting somewhere else as the people on this feed are clearly just out looking to put your back up. Don't lower yourself to their standards.

just read this thread and what starts of as intended money saving tip turns out to be a linch mob with accusations of theft.... I say good luck to you....though I'm not sure you have saved much in the scheme of things as you had to spend over £500 inc diesel, initially.
good luck to you though.......whatever happened to salvage rights? I too have taken stuff without permission....I picked up two rolls of insulation that had fell off the back of a pickup once, jeez.... the police are going to be busy.!! book'em danno! ;)

Tazzy how have you come to the conclusion the wood was clearly discarded?
Even if it was, it's discarded on someones property.

Tazzy, do you think we should all follow this initiative and start burning wood?

Should we all just go great idea lets do it, or should we put forward the downsides as well so a nice friendly debate can start?
Lets all be positive, lets not argue...burn the forests, take anything you find lying around!

So what have I saved in the last 3 months? our monthly bill has dropped from £160 to £65, this all because of a total rethink on heating the cottage.
I purchased a new chainsaw for £200, a new woodburner for £250, a flat panel heater for the bathroom for £25, this set on 1 just to keep the frost off and increased when we have a bath, and an electric blanket for £25.
The wood for the burner has cost me a small amount for diesel for the Discovery and two stroke for the saw, living in the country means all I do is keep my eyes open for wood on the side of the road, we have survived without the storage heaters and overall the cottage has been warmer.
I realise if you live in town or city you will find this hard to achieve but it is well worth looking at alternatives.

What has your usage in KWH dropped by? Telling us your DD has reduced is meaningless if you are working on estimated readings and accruing debt. If you figures are based on actual readings what are you spending £65 a month on if not heating?

Leaving wood to rot gives out the same amount of carbon gases as burning it.
