Windows Vista Guardian - a marketing scam?

My son was trying to download some Itunes off a site his mate told him about. Suddenly all hell broke loose with virus attack flashing and alerts popping up everywhere. I was directed to a Windows Vista Guardian site where it told me me firewall and all other protection was off and PCs all over the place were trying to hack into my PC; spyware had been detected and 25 critical system objects were apparently lurking somewhere. I have McAfee protection on my PC as recommended by Martin and when I ran a full scan there were no threats or problems reported. Is the Windows Guardian stuff just to get me to spend around 60 dollars on their protection or could there really be something in my PC?
Advice welcomed please

Undoubtedly a con, The alerts you got were probably just your browser's pop up windows. I get them sometimes even though I use a Mac so I know they are con. They get you to download the software then it wont uninstall unless you pay them.0
