People steal from Charity shops? What?? I cant believe people would do that.

In my shops in Reading i catch maybe 10 plus stealing from our shops.
There excuse... "Well why does it matter you didn't pay anything for it in the first place " but it's not the point as we sell the stuff cheap and need to make as much money on what we are given.

Have you been in one yet??

I can't believe some people stoop so low as to try and steal from charity shops and think its 'ok' to do it! I guess with those kind of people its like banging you head against a brick wall :wall:

On another note - Over the weekend I had someone tell me not to go into one of our local charity shops as, " They make too much money over the summer" . I know, can you believe it! I live in a seaside town that is very, very busy during the summer so all the shops make the majority of their money then. I politely told the person that I was pleased that they took a lot of money as it was all going towards a very worthy cause and they deserve every penny. I then went into the shop :rotfl:
Ebay~ A wretched hive of scum and villainy. :p
  • I don't really like buying clothes from a charity shop - same idea - someone could have died wearing it! I know its kinda silly but there you go. I buy books from there - I really like Jeff Archer books but theyre a tenner each on amazon/ebay (if you count postage). I got 5 for a quid at my local Charity Shop! Also very good for ornaments.

I've been reading this thread with interest! I agree that people should not haggle and people should certainly not steal BUT the staff that sell are not that innocent themselves. A lot of people i know work in charity shops to get the best bargains themselves as the bags come through the door. They grab everything they want before it goes on their shelves. I know of several people that either collect from houses for the Charity shops or work in the shops and they take away the good things first. So at the end of the day there is good and bad even in the people who work in these shops!

I went into Oxfam a few months back and this elderly lady came into the shop and left some of her donated items on the counter. I noticed this nice candle stick and asked the assistant if i could buy it. Well once the lady who donated the things left the shop the assistant told me the candle stick was not for sale (very abrupt). How annoying!! She was taking it for herself and i never did see that candle stick again!!!

Where i work i have a strict policy that if something comes in which someone wants we still price it and put it out and then the volunteer / member of staff can buy it.
The volunteers gets 20% but paid staff pay full price.

Although some shops do get the best bargains for them selves as long as it is paid for at the proper price it is being sold fairly.

I agreee with you it's an interesting post .

i was quite surprised when buying a dress in our local oxfam at wekend when the manageress said oh, i knew someone would buy that, i really like it. I must have looked puzzled cos she then explained they have a policy of everything must be out on the shop floor for a day before staff can purchase it, to make it fair to customers. I thought this was a lovely idea, but in a way did feel kind of sorry for the staff who must see people buying stuff they really fancied, and they've done all the work sorting the stuff etc. i think its a hard one on where to draw the line.
