I made a call on Sunday from my postcode and was charged 50p. I mailed O2 to query this and here is the reply:-

Your call was connected through a transmitter, which is located outside of your nominated postcode.

We are not able to guarantee whether you will always be able to connect to the transmitter nearest to your postcode, as this is dependent on the mobile usage of other users in your area. If your nearest transmitter is congested, your call will then connect via the next nearest transmitter.

As this may not be in your nominated postcode, you will be charged for the call.

So much for the "free" weekend calls.
will that's a pitiful excuse- but then there are always pitfalls in offers like these...

They've gone one better with me. When I phoned to complain that I had been charged for calls that should have been free, after twenty minutes of being on-hold intermittently (nice calming music, though), he concluded that there isn't a transmitter in my postcode area, so all my calls go through a transmitter that reports me as being outside my postcode area, so the deal won't work for me. Along the way he made two interesting suggestions:

    1) Perhaps my phone had got diverted because my nearest transmitter was congested. To reset it, I should go for a walk outside my postcode area, make a phonecall (for which I would be charged), then return home and make another phone call which should, hopefully, be free.

    2) I should find out the postcode of my nearest transmitter (his system didn't have that information) and then he might be able to sort it all out.

    You couldn't make it up!

I am now waiting for a return call to confirm they are refunding the call charges, but as it was meant to be an hour ago, I won't hold my breath.

I would be interested to know whether this crazy scheme has worked for any MSEers. If what he told me is correct, I can't see how it can work for many people at all.
