Thanks  - was ranting at the time lol...... as I say, never seen or used one before but know they do two differing cards; one is restricted and one is not. :D

Can you advise what colour you get if you get the current plus without full card then? ie. some current account customers get offered the basic (full auth) card and not the old servicecard type....

Not sure, think you get a blue one or maybe a purple one without cheque guarantee? Not much help was I? :rotfl:

I've had absolutly no problem whatsoever using my Step account card on trains or at tesco pay at pump (both things I do regularly) so I suggest you double check your facts :D

(as an aside to that, the shell pumps which only used to allow a fill of a tenner on the old solo allow £60 fill from the new card - which is nice!)

Trust me you cannot use your debit card at pay at pumps nor on trains and it has been confirmed by several existing staff of natwest on here. What, can't you admit the fact you were wrong?

My facts are spot on, i've since sent a message to them to get clarity (to prove you wrong again) but suffice to say I know what they will reply with, the same as I have already told you!

If you have the step account debit card then you, for a fact - not even up for dispute - cannot pay for petrol at pay at pumps and nor can you use the card on a train or plane (all 3 use offline systems so cannot authorise the card, therefore think for just a minute - you could go overdrawn)..... they do not authorise offline payments - end of.

Instead of totally discrediting yourself, accept the fact you're wrong on this one and save face.

I have a Natwest current plus accout which has BOTH a Blue (solo) for use as a cashcard and a purple CG servicecard 250 attached to it.

The Blue (solo) was for when it was just a basic account, when they upgraded it to current plus i got the purple servicecard & they just left the old solo active with the same account.

Blue is solo Purple is a full CG card. ;)

It is the other way around, you get the blue card with step, purple with current+.

Unless like myself you get BOTH with current plus. Some people are given a solo card with a current plus account depending on thier circumstances if they don't qualify for a full servicecard. When i was upgraded they left my old solo active, so i have both cards with my current plus.
  • Well, despite the majority of votes being for NatWest, I've ended up opening a Basic Bank Account with HSBC.

I'll try to get by with a pre-paid MasterCard, as everything domestic is done by direct debit / standing order, I'll just have to become more aware of needing a HSBC cashpoint or post office than just using my Lloyds TSB Visa debit card!

Depite the annoying restrictions, HSBC seems to be the choice for building a relationship with, and they've said I'm entitled to look at an upgrade in 6 months anyway, when things should be a lot better off.

Many thanks for the help, advice and opinions given - the shared thoughts and experiences of others have been a great help, and given me a lot to think about and consider, before reaching this decision. Thanks again, everyone! You've really been a helping hand, and I appreciate it.

As far as I am aware, HSBC, like the vast majority of other banks, will allow you to use any ATM, and not restrict it to just their own.

Yes I am aware of this, I was just pointing out the fact that the blue card was full auth, purple one not, which in his post never-in-doubt had mixed up (due to a rant I do believe :D)!

You must be the only natwest step account customer who can use there card on a train or in a pay pump.

The cards are Visa Electronic cards so therefore are full authorisation so all payments are required to be authorised at the time the transaction is carried out :)

Its just not possible and the business change unit confirmed this when the transition started to take place back in september.

    Taken from the T&Cs
If you have a card that displays the Visa Debit logo and the card does not display a cheque guarantee hologram you will only be able to use your card at a retailer or supplier of services where they can authorise the transaction with us at the time of the transaction being made. If this is not possible the transaction will be declined.

I did mention that for an ex employee they (catflea) were very wrong! What can you do, some people just won't accept it when they're wrong :silenced::think::whistle:
