Personally I would say don't touch Turkey with a barge pole but I assume it's too late to back out now.
Careful what you buy, nearly everything is fake and not particularly good quality fakes. If you smoke or are going to buy tobacco be very careful there is some really awful stuff.
Get used to being accosted by salesman trying to sell you rubbish.
Be careful what you drink/eat, I would say it is nearly impossible not to get ill in "the sick man of Europe"
Don't get enticed into a mosque it might cost you a lot of money to get out.0 -
Turkey is wonderful much nicer than Greece imo. We have been going for the last 3 years and we have travelled all over Europe and its our fav place! Turkey is very beauiful and the food is wonderful! We have never had a dicky stomach and found the people friendy and helpful. I forced my sister and her husband to holiday there this year (they didn't want too) and they have now fallen in love with the place. Its cheaper than home and is full of history. Which bit of Turkey are you going to?But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more0 -

thanks for your answers in advance0 -
Istanbul is huge - with so much to see & do - We stayed in Sultanahmet (Aya Sofia & Blue Mosque area)
Our hotel arranged to pick us up from the Airport for something like £10. However there are plenty of taxis outside - But tgell them where you are going and agree a price first. Make sure you do this on all your taxi trips
Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia & Grand Bizarre are all must do's - We also loved the boat trip down the bosphorus - abfab!!
Restaurants are in abundance - We tended to watch where the locals went and ate there.
Burtie - Which resort are you going?? Ive been to most and all got a lot going for them - Not least the welcome you will get from the locals. Yes there will be a bit of hassle - some resorts worse than others - But all you need is a firm no and your Ok. Do you know about the £10 visa?

I loved Turkey but had the trots for the entire 2 weeks - not fun on an overnight coach with no toilet!
We started off in Instanbul for a few days - can't remember the hotel but it wasn't far from Aya Sofia. Topkapi Palace is worth a visit as is the Blue Mosque and the Bazaar for jewellery. Then we went on a coach tour of Cappadocia to see the troglodyte caves and fairy chimneys, hiked through the valley where Star Wars was filmed, followed by a trip to Olympos on the south coast to see the eternal flame (chimaera). Somewhere down that way is a hippy-type treehouse place to stay. Then up to Pamukkale to visit the hot springs (very touristy - watch the prices), along to Ephesus to see the ruins and back up to Istanbul.
Got pretty sick of people offering us apple tea and carpets, but had no problem with crime. Found the people very pleasant and friendly, and would definitely go back. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0 -
We went to Turkey 2 years ago after a lapse of going twice a year for 5 years, we will never go back.
It has got so expensive, you get hassled all the time and they can be quite intimidating,I got robbed of my purse on Icmeler market but the market stall holder saw who it was and I got it back but was very upset over it.
Was never ill and we ate at places where the locals ate because although we would not go back they are very friendly and helpful people.
Don't drink the water, keep away from the lemon cologne they splash on you(it burns)keep your bag close and zipped with the zipper to front, mine was to the back and thats how they got my purse.
Hope we have not put you off too much, have a great time.
We are off to Egypt in 6 weeks and have read similar reviews but are going regardless.Regards

As soon as you get there find a local shop and buy some mozzie repellant called KOV, it's cheap and it works!0
