Barclaycard Initial - Unable to make a decision

  • I disagree, my sister works for Barclaycard [sales], so she should know!

And my Dad is bigger than your Dad;)

What is your credit history like?

The Initial is targeted more toward people who have a low score due to little past credit, less so toward people that have a low score due to previous adverse information.

Perhaps if you open a Capital One Classic and Vanquis, wait a year, you will then be in a much stonger position to apply for a Barclaycard.

I'd had a Aquacard account for 12 months and a Vanquis account for 6 months when I applied for the Barclaycard Initial - I got the "Need more information" and I was approved with a £1,150 limit. Likely due to the flawless recent history on two other cards ;)

I think this is right - Barclaycard are the mainstream lender out of all these and their criteria is going to be stricter. I would say wait the 6 months they have advised and try again

Over the last four or five years, I've applied for about 15 cards. Not once have I had an instant accept, every single time I've had "we need more information", or "we need more time". Half the time (including Barclaycard Initial) I've been accepted, half the time i've been declined.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

Clearly she is mistaken. Don't worry, it happens. I've spoken to Barclaycard sales a few times in the past and I have been misinformed several times. I don't blame the sales agents themselves, rather the trainers / management that lie to them.

Barclaycard will either provide you with an approval, referral, or decline, at the end of an application.

The approval states Congratulations for being accepted and the applicant is emailed their limit a couple of days later.

The referral states they need more information - at this point the application could go either way - it simply means that the computer couldn't make up it's mind and a person will do the decision making instead.

And the decline either states that "We are sorry but you didn't meet our criteria", or "We declined your application due to information found on your credit file from (whoever)".

Over the years fellow members have posted on here to say their application was referred, some ended up being approved, others ended up being declined.

I'm not having a go at your sister personally, it's just that for whatever reason, in this instance, she is unfortunately mistaken.

Ditto - Bar my second ever credit card (with Natwest) approved me online with 400 limit and Cap One Progress insta-approved me last October.

I'm hoping Barclaycard will still only search Equifax the next time I apply as I meet the criteria for their Simplicity (via EQ, at least).

Just waiting for the six month mark from the date my Initial card was closed :o

  • Thanks for your feedback peeps.

I was thinking about making an application but im scared of rejection haha. I have a unsatisfied CCJ from 2006 for just under a grand and 5 late payment markers from orange back from 2007 and 2008 other than that my credit files are okay. But ive just sent them a nice email asking them to remove the late payment makers from my credit files as a gesture of goodwill. Do you think id likely to be accepted with a CCJ and the late payments?

    Not by Barclaycard, no.

Certainly I think you stand a good chance with the Capital One Progress - I got one last October with a discharged bankruptcy on my credit file :o

I thought it was acceptable to have a ccj as long as it was not within the last 5 years.

Think about our Initial Credit Card if you:
    • Want your first credit card or want to improve your credit rating
    • Have a credit rating that needs improvement
    • You have no history of bankruptcy
    • You have not had any County Court Judgments (CCJs) or Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) registered against you in the past 5 years
    • You have a history of missing payments on your credit commitments
    • You have been unsuccessful in attempts to obtain a credit card in the past (12 months) OR
    • You have no credit history, for example;
      • You have never used credit in the past
      • You are a student
      • You are new to the country.
    • Don't already have a Barclaycard
    • Have had a permanent UK address for 3 months or more
    • Have a regular income of more than £10,000 pa
    • Are aged 18 or over

It says all this but also says meeting this criteria is not a guarantee of acceptance - usual waiver.

I more than meet all of these excluding the adverse (ie I have none) but they declined me advising me to apply in 6 months

Take no notice of the criteria it all goes by how good your credit report is.

Why not just try the Barclaycard Pre-Application Checker?

It doesn't bother your credit rating and will give you a good (not perfect) indication of how your "application" would be dealt with.
