The thing is (and I'm not sure - I haven't thought this all the way through - I may be arguing against myself here) surely all suppliers' discounts have, strictly speaking, this same 'may' clause except it is not usually invoked? That is, mostly I read that the discounts are only credited to the balance when the bill is calculated each quarter. In practice, all suppliers (except E-on) seem to also include and calculate the discounts pro rata on irregular final bills. But by a strict reading they should not be doing this. So all customers should assume that they will not receive any such credits on a final bill.

Like I said, no idea which side of the fence that suggestion falls.
  • Hi there,

Re: no discount on final bill with Eon, can someone explain to me exactly what is the final bill. Is it the bill for the full last quarter you were with Eon or is it the bill sent out after cancellation has taken place, ie the bill for the circa 6 weeks between cancellation being set in motion and the actual changeover date.

I was thinking it was the former.

    Thanks.

    Hi earthlover,

A final bill is issued on completion of a change of supply or house move.

For example if you receive a quarterly bill on the 1 March 2010, and then move supplier and this completes on the 1 May 2010. The final bill will cover the two months between the 1 March bill and the end date.

In the case of a house move to another E.ON supplied address you won't lose the final bill discount.

    Hope this helps.

    Brian :)

    Which months does that cover?
    Another bill on 1 April?
Final bill 2 months from 1 april to 1 May?

Could you make that a bit clearer so that we could understand how best to minimise the loss of discount?
    Thanks

It's quite clearly a typo. The discount would be lost on the two months between 1 Mar and 1 May.

So would the safest compromise on minimising the discount loss be 1 Feb to give notice to transfer? (4 weeks before a bill date)
On the basis they couldn't do it less than 4 weeks and they might do it somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks?

    Hi paceinternet,

Moving in the warmer period is obviously the best time of year to move, as the percentage discount you lose will be on your smaller bills (in theory).

It's best to time the transfer initiation when you receive a quarterly bill, that way you will only lose discount on a 4-6 week period. Bearing in mind that is that the transfer takes 4-6 weeks. Unfortunately there is no set time frame for a transfer to complete.

  • Does anyone know for sure whether Eon is the only supplier not to give discount on the final bill?

I mean the other suppliers don't state whether they do or not, do they?

It may well be that they also give no discount on final bills.

Perhaps some reps from other companies could clarify this for us.

I've switched from EON to EDF in the last year. I was aware of the 'not getting a discount' on your last bill, but only through these forums, doubtless it was in the EON small print somewhere. TBH it didn't make a lot of difference to my bill but I guess it depends on what balance you have on the account. Certainly I more than made up for it by the time I'd got my first cheaper EDF bill; don't let it put you off switching, that's what they want...
