alterations to holiday after you've booked

A Cautionary tale- book your holiday at speed & you may loose your holiday spending money.
I just made a Very costly mistake, I booked a holiday (flight&accom) online with Thomas Cook. I had looked at schedule wrong at work and couldn't get dates off that I had booked my holiday for. I phoned the travel company within 24hour & was told there would be a charge for altering the dates. I did expect this, but not the amount. £25 admin cost yes, But a total of £160 most of which the airline was charging me & for a May holiday instead of June (a cheaper time to have a holiday).
I didn't comfirm the change till the next day, as I wanted to check with my boss first this time. I phoning yesturday & the amount had gone up to £215. Ouch!! The flights were £400 originally & whole holiday only came to £650! So thats a 1/3 extra. I had to pay, I had no choice, I was told I would loose over £4oo if I cancelled.
I can only blame myself, but did they really have to charge me that amount? I do not think that is a reasonable amount. I am travelling alone, so you can imagin how much worse it would have been if this happened to a family.
When you buy insurance online you get a cooling off period. Why not this??
What do you think? Is this a fair amount?
