I did some work for Folgate insurance some years ago and we often talked about all these things. Stuff like the hire car add on, the legal stuff and all these other add ons are massive money spinners for the company as everyone pays of them and few use them.

I also had one of these and have used it. I have used the household one as well. They are both crap, utter rubbish. If you've half a brain you are better than them. Now I was going after other people not protecting myself when someone was coming after me but I think they would do that anyway as it would be them picking up the bill.

I don't know but if you think about the housing legal and the car legal, that might be around £50 or so and you might, just might be able to get decent cover in the market for that amount ?

It saved me a fortune when I successfully sued another driver for damages.

    How ?

If you successfully sued for damages you would have your legal costs paid.

Not sure how it actually saved you anything.

Legal Protection will recover losses (Assuming you have a reasonable chance of success) that a no win no fee solicitor will not become involved in for instance very low value personal injury claims or recovering your excess etc

As a claimant receives 100% of the damages in no win no fee cases, the lawyers are working merely for their fees and costs so why would the amount of your claim be important ?

I have found them to be useless and toothless.

As for the excess, then if you are at fault you cannot recover it and if the other party is at fault, you don't have to pay your excess as their insurance does.

If you are talking about third parties being uninsured then just who do you think is going to pay up ? the man who had no money for the insurance ?

I don't think you fully understand what you're talking about.

Your excess is an "uninsured loss" which means in effect you are responsible to pay it if you claim under your own policy irrespective of who is to blame. There are a small amount of insurers who will not make you pay the claim if it is very clear that you are not at fault but this is rare.

If you are not at fault and have paid your excess with no other losses a no win no fee solicitor will not become involved so it is up to you to recover the excess or if you have legal expenses they will recover it.

With regard to solicitors costs they will not work on a case on a no win no fee basis if the amount of damaged are below a certain amount as under this figure they cannot issue a CFA

And if he tried and failed without the cover it could have cost him a fortune.

I too have used both householders and motoring recovery services, no issues whatsover in my book.

As has been said, if I'd lost it would have cost me a packet. Without the insurance, I probably wouldn't have taken the risk. In any case, costs are not always awarded to the winning party.

Also, there was the lack of hassle factor. I just let someone else get on with it.

What about defending yourself e.g. againt a driving conviction where there is no other party to pay your costs.
I don't think "no win no fee" works in this situation, whereas insurance does.

I am always happy to be corrected and increase my knowledge.
My combined stand alone policy says it will defend me against driving convictions.
