Legal Protection

Options
On a car insurance policy, what exactly is legal protection?

I have always had it, but it adds about £30 on to the policy, just wondered what exactly it is.

Does everyone have this?

Thanks :o

Legal protection is exactly that. If you find yourself getting sued for an incident (outwith the scope of just fixing the vehicles) then it will cover some or all of your court costs. Should be a bit about it in your policy booklet.

Just read my policy (Co-op) and the legal protection gives up to £100,000 of legal assistance towards recovery of excess, loss of earnings, temporary replacement vehicle or personal injury claims.

It is extremely handy if you are hit and injured by an uninsured driver as I found out a few years back. I didn't realise it was optional these days though, my insurer offers it as standard and there's no opt out (I think).

It pays for a crap legal secretary, overseen by a solicitor, to be disinterested in your claim and drag it out for ages before saying NO! :D

No, not in my experience. It saves all the hassle of pursuing uninsured loses:T

Also checkout the small print, you may find it extends much further and covers other legal issues, not just driving ones

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

    that is so correct!

My elderly uncle had the extra legal protection and had an accident which was not his fault. Insurance company weren't interested. There are similar reports on the web.
I suppose some insurance companies handle their legal protection better than others?

Perhaps it varies between insurance companies, but when I had an accident where the other driver was quite obstructive, the law firm involved did everything in sorting out the small claim against the other driver.

It went to court, a legal representative from the law firm was there to help me, won the case and got me all my expenses back, I'd highly recommend.

You could cancel the legal protection, save the fee and join Your Key it is free, automatically renews and as far as I can see is useful at no cost, from Key explained;-
"Is free accident legal expenses insurance possible?
It is free to you as we pay the premium. We can do this as we earn commission when the after accident services are arranged. These are the commissions which your insurance company or broker would receive. The difference is that we package the insurance and services together, and make no charge."

I have no connection to the company and have not up to now had cause to use them, so cannot comment on the service provided, FAQs

    Well?

I'm not sure if that is a plug or not, but what I do agree with is the principal. All these outfits operate somewhat similarly, they look at your case, and if it has a chance they give no win no fee. That's what you are paying for. You can do that without paying the premium, but the take up rate would I think be less;)

I agree, I would not have had the time nor the energy to chase up, co-ordinate and deal with the MIB, the police, the courts and the orthopaedic consultant and psychologist who assessed me. It took 2 years but I got reasonable compensation out of it although I'd rather have a neck that worked properly. If a legal secretary was doing all that (unlikely as the person I spoke to regularly on the phone about it was quite obviously a solicitor) good luck to him/her.

does anyone know of a stand alone policy I could buy that would cover more than 1 vehicle? I have 4 vehicles and always pay the extra 25-30 pounds for legal cover on each vehicles insurance.
