ema and company dividends?

Options
Already posted this on another threadbut then thought i might be better starting a new one.

Hi, I've just come across this and joined the forum so please be nice!
Trying to fill in the EMA form for my son, all seems to be gooing well until I get to my earnings. Like a few others, I'm a ltd company and pay myself dividends and can't see anywhere on the form to put this figure in. I know there is a box for dividend tax credit amounts, but I didn't draw enough dividends to recieve a tax credit.
Any ideas where I enter the actual dividend amount on the form?

  • I'd like to be nice - I'm sure you're a nice person - but would I be right in thinking that you are a limited company and paying yourself company dividends in order to avoid higher rate income tax and keeping your NI contributions to a minimum? And you probably earn over the £30k maximum allowed for EMA - just not in a PAYE sense? Do you really feel that you are therefore entitled to take money that is actually meant for poor families, and not those with good accountants? If that's the case, you're just costing the rest of us, who pay tax the normal way, even more money, so thanks a lot.

(If that's not the case, I apologise, and if you really do earn less than £30k I hope you work out how to claim your dividends on your form). But due to a ridiculous loophole, there's so many kids on EMA with self-employed parents who don't need a penny of it that it really annoys me when they claim it, and I don't see why we should help them scam more money on this forum.)
  • Thanks percymoneysaver, however i was lookiing for advice not just your own personal view on the world. Because of the industry I'm in and the way I work it is easier to work as a ltd company. I tend to work on short term, interesting jobs often with time out of work between contracts.
Your reply seems seems to smack of bitterness and jealousy towards any who are on more money than you - a bit sad really!
Sorry to say, but I doubt if I'll be back on here.
  • Do you get child tax credits? If so, you won't need to provide any more income details if my memory serves me correctly (I don't have a copy of the form to hand). Otherwise, there's normally an "any other income" box which can be used.
  • Thank you student_advisor, that is the sort of info I was looking for. I've already come to the conclusion that my son won't be eligible for the EMA.

But surely if you're on more money than us, your child won't be eligible for EMA - you can't have it both ways!

I wouldn't worry ONW - the OP is just cross he can't screw more money out of the government.

    Don't worry, I'm not bothered!

I just think it's hilarious that someone who's trying to get help claiming money available to those on a low income should simultaneously be boasting about how much he earns!
