Has anyone subscribed to D&A "Contact Lenses by Post", by which they are offering a free assessment and trial at the moment?

I am wondering if the T/C allows cancellation after trial or first month so that I could get a discounted contact lense prescription.

Can anyone reccommend a good place to buy Johnson & Johnson ACUVE dailys?

Im buying from the internet for the first time.

Does it matter what brand i use? Acuve seem to be one of the most expensive.

I'm not an expert, but I think the fit/sizes are slightly different across brands.

I don't think you can just change at will.

You could of course ask your optician and they might be able to presribe something cheaper if there is something suitable.

Also depending on your presciption you might not necessarily be able to find ones suitable.
Different brands cover different ranges so your prescription might not be available on other brands.
  • I'd previously been using Postoptics for my Monthly Disposable Ciba Focus Visitint lenses, but, last year, whilst having my eye test at a very well known high-street opticians, I asked if they would "pricematch" the Postoptics cost of £59 for 12 months supply, which they agreed to. I have to pay £20 for the prescription as I'm not using their other services, and I don't get aftercare (but, after 6 years, in which I've never used it!) I decided this was still a cheaper option than buying them from them without the pricematch at well over £100! They still "pricematched" for me this year too.
And, when you consider, that I recently picked up 6 months supply of a well-known opticians all-in-one solution, for a mere £1 at a bootsale (still sealed and with well over a years expiry left on it!), the benefits of contact lenses are getting better all the time! They're even cheaper than wearing glasses for me! ;D :D ;D
  • For one helluva great deal have a look at

    https://www.coastalcontacts.com

I ordered lenses from them - branded -. Even tho they are in America I received them 2 days after ordering, and at less than half the UK price

Being new to contacts and having only ever needed to wear glasses in front of a computer I'm not too clued up in this area.  But now, having spent too long in front of a computer at work I'm considering contacts.  The thing is it's only my right eye that is short sighted.  Will an optician give the OK just to have one contact lens or will they always want you to have two?

Sorry, only just read this. The answer is yes. I have astigmatism in one eye and I've only ever worn one lens. I've had eye checks from various opticians since I first started wearing lenses and none have ever said I need them in both eyes. When I buy my dailies online I just order as if I'm ordering for both eyes using the info for my right eye. :)
  • Luisep - is there any special reason for writing about
"very well known high-street opticians" and "a well-known opticians all-in-one solution" without telling us who you are talking about? If you don`t want anyone to know, then why write it here?
  • I wear gas permeable lenses and buy them from Specsavers. I buy my solutions from Postoptics as they are so much cheaper. But I find that Specsavers are penalising me for not buying their solutions. I have a big sticker on my file with them saying "No aftercare".
I get charged for my checkup now, which used to be free and annual. My check-ups have increased from
once a year to quarterly. I get a reminder through the post, but still only go six-monthly. And I think I am paying more for my lenses now, either that or their inflation rate is way above anything else.
Anybody else got stories like this??

My experience of D&A is a bad one - they'll do everything they can to stop you going on the Internet including not giving your details out to Postoptics

I changed at D&A from varifocal lenses after a bad trial to normal lenses and they subsequently said that I was on varifocals when I tried to get them from Postoptics!!!

Had a major bust up with the Contact Lens specialist and Shop Manager but think I'll have to go to Specsavers to get started again.

I've just come across this thread and it makes interesting reading!

One point that hasn't been raised in relation to the expense of eye tests/ aftercare etc is that if you live in a university town, it may well be worth checking out if they have an optometry department.

All eye tests/ aftercare are free when done by the penultimate/ final year students under close supervision of qualified opticians/optometrists etc (sorry don't know the difference between them all!). OK so they take a little longer but so what. Plus, facilities are often state of the art- at Cardiff uni the eye clinic looks like its part of NASA! The glasses/contacts are subsidised in order to entice people in for the students to practice on so you get really good deals, especially if you have a complex prescription.

Definitely worth a look- might save a few quid
