I don't mean to be rude, but .... !!!!!!??? If I went to a wedding and was given some bag of random stuff, that I'd never use/might be allergic to ... I'd slip it in a plant pot when nobody was looking. Or behind a curtain.

    Why bother?

Save yourself time, effort, stress .... these favours things are fairly new. No idea where the idea crept into, but they really seem mad to me.

... what about the blokes? What do they get? Set of 3 screwdrivers and some WD40?

    Favours aren't new at all.

There were favours at a wedding I was bridesmaid at, in the early 80's, but they have been around for a lot longer than that!
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • Favours used to be the little charms that were on top of the cake (doves, ring etc they all had different symbolic meanings) - these were given to important guests (mothers, sisters etc)... it then developed into all female guests being given a wee thing (often sugared almonds, not sure what that symbolised)... and now it is often for all guests and can be anything you want!

If favours are imprtant to you - go for it (if people don't like them then they shoudl just be grateful to have been invited and considered worthy of a gift!).

If not, don't have them! I'm compromising and having very cheap ones (hopefully 20-30p per person) as they aren't important to me, but my future mil was a bit concerned about what people would think (!) and offered to make them up for me.

Almond wedding favours have been around for hundreds of years and are very popular in Italian, Greek and Middle Eastern Cultures. Five almonds are generally given to represent happiness, health, wealth, children and longevity.

If we had sugared almonds we were only going to have four as we didn't want the fertility :rotfl:I love the Italian word for it but can't remember it off the top of my head, I've got a scrap book for the wedding plans and have cut the word out of a mag.

Thank you for the links angel, I'm just going to have a look at them now. I found some spud guns in a pound shop last night, I think that would suit the men in my family so much more :D

The second martha stewart link is what I was thinking of, give everyone a little bag and get them to pick there own say 5 things or something, that way if I buy 4 different packs of 20 soaps then they can pick the soap that they like best, if they don't want one of one thing they can have 2 of the other, if that makes sense. Also ties in with the being flexible so I can buy things when they are on offer. Now I'm mentally trying to work out my boots points

boots points are the best ;) !! i think a help yourself to goodies table will be great and is a really nice gesture. i am more interested in the gifts for everyone than any of the rest of it! I am really into stationery and little things and family always say i am the generous ones for birthdays and stuff as im the one making loads of effort so giving gifts is the stuff i like. but doing it on a budget is even better as lots of people i know would be amazed how cheaply you can do this sort of thing if you shop around and make things.

Horace, is there a significance with the differing colours of sugared almonds?
