No holiday this year..feeling sorry for myself

The last 2 months have been the first in ages where I haven’t overspent and lived within my means. I should be feeling happy. However, it is that time of year where everyone jets off to somewhere sunny and we can't afford a holiday this year (unless I borrow as usual). 4 of my friends are off on holiday next week, one of them for a month! I am so jealous and last night almost booked something, but stopped myself at the last minuet. I got my end of year uni results last week and they weren’t as good as I hoped, so that has also led to me feeling sorry for myself.

I have some Tesco vouchers, so plan on using them for days out for the kids. Our last holiday was 4 days at Haven a few months ago, so I also feel guilty that that is the only holiday they will get this year.

No point to this really, just wanted a moan! Anyone else not having holiday this year?

  • Can really identify with you on this one! My daughter has just returned from holiday in Majorca and is proudly showing off her photo's - it SO makes me yearn to go that - like yourself - I was very tempted to book something especially as a well-known holiday firm emailed me their late offers yesterday......

Like you, good sense prevailed (all be it at the last minute) and I resisted so I guess rather than bemoaning what we can't have we should give ourselves a pat on the back for not seccumbing - Imagine how we would be feeling this morning if we'd increase our debt/borrowing by organising something!

I exchanged some Tesco vouchers for Days out vouchers and had a brill, cost free day on Tuesday. I think they're good VFM and there is a good selection to choose from.

If this has to be the way to go for now, so be it. I know it can be frustrating and disappointing (made worse when the green-eyed monster adds their bit :o ) so let's try enjoying what we CAN have and be thankful we're working towards being debt free.

Hope you feel better about it soon.

havent had a holiday in 8 years. none of my four children are really that bothered, they know if we cant afford it then we dont have it, holidays are certainly something that we cannot afford. my oldest 2 have only ever been on one holiday, and my youngest two never. kids get used to it, there are plenty of things you can do with the children that dont cost the earth.

Children don't mind if you don't go on holiday. Go camping in the garden instead. Take them to the park. Go for a train ride somewhere nice. Visit friends and stay overnight.

They just want to know they are loved and cared for!

I have foregone a summer holiday also. I had jobs to do around the house and knew the cash was needed for them. I too found it very hard when I helped a friend book a holiday to my favourite resort and she said 'why don't you come too?'. I am going to start saving up for next year though and am pleased to have got some long overdue jobs done.

No holiday last year or this year so starting to get really fed up. Middle daughter is going on a 5 day school trip in October which is only costing us £50 so at least she's getting away for a while. Oldest daughter turned down the chance to go to France with the school in June because her best friend wasn't allowed to go, the friend got a last minute place (as her mum works in the school) and she went anyway:mad: Hoping to get a weekend away later in the year if the price is right.

take it from a kid who didn't get hols further than her aunts in englandshire, it's not summit we miss. in fact not oging on hols as a kid has helped my debt situation cause i've never been on one as an adult and so never increased my debt for it.

i've only been abroad on hols twice (twice more with school trips on the ferry, but for some reason i never count that) and we got those because of an accident my stepdad had off shore and he spent some of his compo on it. and it made me appreciate it so much more knowing that it wouldnt be summit i could have every year.

now i can't wait to be debt free and plan my holiday of a lifetime to venice...

Do you know, I hear of people taking their small children or even babies trekking round the world, going to see the Andes, going to exotic beaches and things like that and it occurred to me .....those types of holiday are for the adults! Small children don't enjoy them, quite often the climate is wrong and the sun is too hot and they get eaten alive by midges!

Small children would be happier with a paddling pool and sandpit in the garden.

Older ones are happy camping, going on school trips or staying with friends.

No I didnt get to go on holiday either when I was little - three holidays until I was 18 and two after. I havent been on my jollies for two years now and I would love to go but I cant justify spending all that money at the moment.

My parents used to have 7 jobs between them and we always had two holidays each year. One week in March and one in October. Always in UK and always at a holiday camp. We loved it.

Holidays were important to us and I still make sure we get at least two a year. I plan for it and as we don't drink, smoke or go out much it is our entertainment. It gives us guaranteed quality time as a family and my hard working husband a guaranteed rest. For us it takes a very high priority.

However if you have no money then I would not suggest that you borrow to go!!! Camping can be very cheap and loads of fun, you don't need to go far, sometimes we go ten miles up the road, it is being away that is important to us.

Days out are ok but the housework still looms at the end of the day, the post still arrives and the phone still rings so I think that the money could be used to get away if you plan it.

    Good luck

    Louise
