Trying to connect to Xbox live!!

My son is trying to connect to Xbox live using a wireless adaptor. It is asking for a WPA key and we don't know where to find it. Our router for the internet has a WEP key but this doesn't seem to be working, any suggestions asap would be most appreciated please.

Are you sure you are trying to connect via your own wireless router and not one of your neighbours? My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0 -
Yes definitely our own!! It's asking for WPA but we dont seem to have one, have had info from internet baout poutting settings on flash drive but it still doesn't work. Have ewven changed the router to WPA only but we need a number to enter into xbox!!If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect....................................

Have you actually specified a new WPA password though? The WEP and WPA standards are different, so you need to provide the router with a new WPA passphrase.
From Wikipedia:
Pre-shared key mode (PSK, also known as Personal mode) is designed for home and small office networks that don't require the complexity of an 802.1X authentication server. Each wireless network device encrypts the network traffic using a 256 bit key. This key may be entered either as a string of 64 hexadecimal digits, or as a passphrase of 8 to 63 printable ASCII characters.[5] If ASCII characters are used, the 256 bit key is calculated by applying the PBKDF2 key derivation function to the passphrase, using the SSID as the salt and 4096 iterations of HMAC-SHA1.[6]
Shared-key WPA is vulnerable to password cracking attacks if a weak passphrase is used.[7][8] To protect against a brute force attack, a truly random passphrase of 13 characters (selected from the set of 95 permitted characters) is probably sufficient.[9] Lookup tables have been computed by the Church of WiFi (a wireless security research group) for the top 1000 SSIDs[10] for a million different WPA/WPA2 passphrases.[11] To further protect against intrusion the network's SSID should not match any entry in the top 1000 SSIDs.0 -
most routers will allow you to log into the admin control panel and get the key that way. for netgear stuff, https://www.routerlogin.com user: admin / Pass: password and click the wireless settings link.
If it was an ISP supplied router, then it might be printed on the bottom of the router.
Make sure you enter the code exactly as seen as the code is case sensitive.0 -
Thank you both guys. Our problem is actually getting a WPA key. We have a WEP key on our router and everybody keeps saying that we can cahnge the settings to a WPA key but how do we end up with an actual number to enter onto the xbox. Have found how to change the router settings to WPA only but that still doesn't give us a physical number to enter. I am not very technical where things like this are concerned so would appreciate nice easy answers or solutions please. If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect....................................

enter the WEP key into the xbox and see if it connects. if it doesn't make sure its your network that you are connecting to and that you are typing the code correctly.
PS. you should really be using WPA as WEP encryption can be hacked in under a minute0 -
IFAB,
YOU need to provide the router with a new WPA key. It doesn't automatically provide one for you. When you select WPA you should see the password / passphrase box and whatever you put in there, you then put into the xbox.0 -
Have tried WEP and it didn't work and I know that WPA is more secure but the problem is when we go into our router configuration page it lets us change it to WPA but nothing comes up and obviously we need to have some form of a number/password/passphrase to enter into the xbox. We know how to change the settings etc but need to somehow know what we then enter into the xbox. We have found info from internet about putting settings onto a flash drive and then plugging that into the xbox but that then asked for the WEP key which doesn't work. Talk about going round the houses!!!!If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect....................................

P.S. it is actually finding the Livebox and saying connected but then it asks for the WPA which as I said is the bit we can't doIf practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect....................................

Is there perhaps an "advanced" button in the router configuration? That might give you the additional settings that you need.0
