Hi
My daughter came through last night to say she couldnt get on her netbook because of a pop up saying:
Warning! Visiting this site may harm your computer!?
It is in a red box and will not let us access the internet keeps blockin it. We do have anti virus on the netbook so not sure how it got through, she may have pressed something, blooming kids. Anyway any help or advice would be very appreciated to try and rid it ourselves or would I be better taking it to a shop?
Thanks in advance

If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.;)

If you're sure that the site you were going to visit/ are visiting is not harmful, then turn off the anti-virus and see if it will let you access the net.
Sometimes anti-virus software are overly keen and block something that is not that harmful. Once you can access the Internet, I would then run a full scan with your anti virus just to make sure that you really don't have a virus.
Hope this helps.0 -
Does the warning look like this: http://www.411-spyware.com/images/SecurityHelpCenter.com.gif ?
If so, it appears that the browser has been hijacked. Anti-virus doesn't always catch this type of malware. I'd recommend that you install Malware-Bytes or SuperAntiSpyware on the computer and run a scan and either post the results back here or allow the programs to fix the issues.
Malwarebytes can be downloaded here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/
This site might also be helpful, if the error is the same: http://www.411-spyware.com/securityhelpcenter-com-removal
Either way I recommend running anti-malware first, taking it to a shop they'll just do the same thing and charge you for it

I forgot to add, thanks to gwyne, that some site do genuinely produce that warning message if they have been reported as malicious. So if your daughter is accessing a specific site then there could be a genuine problem with that site hosting malicious software or if your daughter is receiving this message for all or most sites then it's probably due to malware.0

And one last thing to add: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/3-blog-pics/website-malware-warning-firefox.png notice the difference between the two images that I posted in my first reply and this one? One says "get me out of here" and "why was this site blocked" and says that some sites try and install programs etc.. a genuine message produced by Firefox.
The other message states "Continue unprotected" and "get security software" and "we recommend you install (or activate) anti-virus software".
What a bunch of nice guys, obviously fake, but they have copied the genuine Firefox warning and modified it for scareware/malware.
It's a slow day at work ...........................0 -

Hi yes the warning looks like this and if you press continue it wants you to buy spyware from an American site, she was only going on YOU TUBE which I am sure is safe, but she does go on MSN BUDDY, not the same but part of MSN so not sure if it came by that. It does not let us on to internet to download this malware application so can we do it in the safe mode?
Thanks for all the help everyone. If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.;)
