  • By coincidence I got rid of my Konica Minolta DSLR right after the company was taken over by Sony. I noticed Sony soon started to pitch their cameras towards the higher end of the market (essentially the same camera, but now marketed as a premium product with price to match).

See what they feel like in your hands at a camera store. Compared to my Olympus E510, my Konica/Sony was huge, heavy and noisy. It had lots of problems with dust specks on the sensor. Plus the on switch was on the left which was hard to reach so I was always missing shots.

Dpreview(dot)com has lots of reviews and technical specs to consider too. Sometimes it's the simple things that will sway your decision, because essentially there is very little different these days between the big brands.

Check out the Olympus E520 and E620 while you're at it. Internal stabilisation, the best anti-dust system in the business, plus very small and light cameras across the range.

I just bought a DSLR for my littl'un.

My shortlist was the Nikon D3000 or the Sony A230.

My preference between the two was the D3000 due to the better LCD Screen and (marginally) better professional reviews.

I saw the Sony Alpha DSLR-A230 Digital SLR Camera + 18-55mm Zoom Lens on Pixmania for £299 (£305.80 delivered).
On top of that Quidco has tracked £15.31 so the Sony A230 with a 18-55mm zoom lens has cost me £290.49

I couldn't justify the extra money simply for the better LCD on the Nikon.

Unfortunately for this post, the camera was due to be delivered today but nobody was home :( I have a nice "sorry we missed you" card from DHL though. :)

I'm no photographer so I have no suggestions about lenses at all :)
  • hi thanks but i still havent got as clue on what model to get lol
either the d3000 or a330 dont fancy the a230 as the lense was juttering about ....
  • People are generally in 2 camps... Nikon and Canon.

My uncle has a Sony... and he hates it. He played with my Nikon (albeit a D90) and he loved it.

The reason why I chose a Nikon... lens. Essentially, I can put a 20year old lens onto my Nikon without worrying. That may not quite be true for the 3000, but it is certainly worth considering, as it suddenly opens up the eBay market!

In the end, it is all personal preferences.
  • hi thanks with the d3000 they have designd new so old lenses wont fix on they have to be the new dx range and would like to have is on the lense
were as sony will fit any made lense for sony or tamrom or sigma and sony has the is in the body so i think the lens would be cheaper in the long run as i wouldnt need is in the lens
i had a canon but didnt like it so was wanting a change but i have noticed the sony a330 is exclusive to jessops wy would this be thanks

The d3000 will only work with lens which have a built in focus motor but I'm sure you wouldnt regret buying one.
What do you mean lense was juttering about
Some old Minolta lenses will work on the Sony as Sony took over Minolta and uses their lens mount.

I'm sure I read the ONLY difference between the a230 and A330 is the Live view. The camera itself is the same thing.
  • when i tryd the a230 in the shop wehn i was moveing it around it was auto focasing all the time were as the a330 and d3000 they were not and im sure i read some were that was a flaw with the a230 when say walking around looking for wildlife it was focasing on all the time
