This is one of those threads that would be much improved with a few pictures or a video

IMO, you're going to work anyway and would still be making the journey with or without her.

Yes, you may be covering an extra 5 miles a day which equates to about a gallon a week in most cars as they use more when cold.

I would say that anywhere between £10 to £20 would be a fair amount.

  • Thanks guys - think I've decided on asking for £10 a week.

I would have said £20 per week, by the time you go out of your way to pick them up then £10 would be of little benefit to you. The girl needing a lift may be a low earner but you have said your not in a strong financial position yourself.
I only do 130-150 miles per week and its costing me £20 in petrol.

Once you start asking for a low rate, you will be stuck with it!

Should the taxman or your insurance company get picky you cannot be seen to be making a profit out of it - so you cannot charge more than it costs. There are of course various ways of calcuating that....
  • Are there any insurance ramifications? Uni would not let DD use her car to share for that reason. Would have been far cheaper than the uni hiring a car for weeks on end.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • I did similar for a while and where it does save a bit of money their are a lot of awkward factors to take into account:
    -What happens when your sick
-What happens when your on holiday
-Does the person pay less if they dont share for the whole week
-What happens when you need to pop to the shops or work late one night
-Do you get on well enough with the person (can be a lot of time to spend with someone when you dont have much to talk about)
-What happens when you've had a bad day and want to be on your own.

The insurance ramifications are that if you make a profit on it it counts as hiring the car out and requires business use. If you just cover your costs, no problem.

True but your costs are not just fuel based. As the tax office sets 40p per mile as acceptable for using a car for work to cover cost (ie non taxable) then that is what you would have to exceed before you had to declare it for tax.
So OP could charge £16.00 per day (+ mileage to pick up & drop off before tax kicks in)
