Car share - how should we split petrol?

I'm about to start car sharing with someone from work. My total journey each day at the moment is 40miles (including both ways) and it will add on an extra 10 minutes to go and get them and drop them off (they don't drive).
How much should I ask her to contribute? She's one of the very junior staff, so want to be very careful that I don't ask her to pay too much but at the same time, I'm skint and could really use the help towards (unleaded) petrol each week!
Is £10 a week too much? Should I ask for more?

Sounds very reasonable at £2 per day - certainly no less.0 -
Well, imho the fair figure would be however much it takes you to get to hers and half the cost of the petrol you would use otherwise
10 mins away? Lets say for the sake of argument thats 2.5 miles
So you will be doing a total of 45 miles.
Lets say your car does 30mpg and you fill up at £1.10 per litre (cheapest price around here)
5miles to hers and back = £0.83
20 Miles (half distance) = £3.33 a day
Therefore daily cost = £4.16
Over a 5 day week thats 125 miles or £20.81
Thats only factoring in petrol mind you.....
Or, you could take it that you are spending an extra £0.83 a day and ask her for a contribution on that basis. I guess it depends on how comfortable you are asking for an office Juniors contribution (how much would she spend getting to work on Public transport!?)
Hope that helpsProud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -

At the moment the person is making do with gettign lifts with a family member, which can't go on any longer as not practical for family member and she also gets the train. I just looked up how much a monthly train ticket is from 1 March to 5 April and it's £193 which really shocked me!0 -
Well, the way I see it, I've given you the ethical upper and lower limits (in my eyes) and I reckon its would be fair to ask for anywhere between them. As for that as a monthly season ticket, I dont think thats too bad (if I got a season ticket for my commute it'd be £85 a week!) but there are ways and means to get cheaper tickets for the train etc. (I'm down to £9.50 a day at the moment)Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0

£40 a week covers her share of the petrol and gives you a bit towards other running costs and is still less than the train and much more convienient and easy for her0
