Hi
When using this forum there's a lot of stuff down the right-hand side of the page.
Money Saving Tips, Latest MSE News, 2 for 1 Deals etc.
This is very interesting information.
Some people who use the forum a lot, and who have already read it, might find it a bit irritating after a while.
It increases the time to load pages.
I wonder if it would be possible to write a GreaseMonkey script to remove it?

On Wikipedia it gives a typical use of GreaseMonkey as:-
Remove specific content, such as advertising, popups, even whole sections of a page. (For example, filter specific posters from a message board site.)
This is the link for GreaseMonkey:-
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748

Next question, does anybody out there have the skills to do this?

Sure can, but if the info on the side changes you won't get the updated content.

I just use an element hiding rule for Adblock Plus.
    forums.moneysavingexpert.com##TD[style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small; background: url(\"http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/stamp_long.gif\") repeat-y scroll center center rgb(230, 243, 223);"]

No messing around with greasemonkey scripts then.

    Thanks for your replies guys.

@jweb2k The changing content's not a problem, I don't usually read that information anyway.

@fermi I will try your Adblock Plus suggestion when my own PC is back online, on Friday I hope. I'm using a borrowed machine just now.

I tried doing it via greasemoney a year or two back, and while it worked it wasn't very pretty.

Mainly I think because FF was loading the page, and then applying the script. Meaning that page load was slowed, and the removed portions were actually loaded/displayed first and removed rather than not loaded at all.

Adblock plus seems to do it far more efficiently.

If you want a greasemonkey script, then maybe try this?

Platypus is a Firefox extension which lets you modify a Web page from your browser -- "What You See Is What You Get" -- and then save those changes as a Greasemonkey script so that they'll be repeated the next time you visit the page.
There may also be some others that will do similar as well.

I will try your Adblock Plus fix first, though I've never found a need for that addon so far.
I experimented with Greasemonkey a few weeks ago, but I didn't get far. It seemed like a lot of hassle, not something that I want to have to learn just for this one task.

    I see.

I use it anyway, so it was a natural thing to try. ;)

I also use it remove the MSE masthead etc from the forum pages on this laptop. There is an awful lot of useless stuff at the top of the forum pages when your screen isn't that huge vertically....

Yep, I use Adblockplus Element Hider to block certain boxes and frames on MSE - easy to do, you just hover over the box you want to zap and select it. I've blocked most of the boxes including the "Start Here - resource bar", the "Important: this forum is not moderated" and the "moneysaving articles" boxes that clutter up all the vertical space.
Down the side I block everything except the latest newsletter box and latest MSE news.

Much cleaner and faster-loading site now.

In that case, you might need these 2 rules as well then.

Remove main MSE masthead from forum pages.
    forums.moneysavingexpert.com##DIV#MSEMasthead

Remove space hungry "Important: this forum isn't moderated etc......." banner/box from top of forum pages.
