Check out the 'I won, I won' thread.
If MSE losers were as keen to admit they entered and wasted the entry the 'I lost, I lost' thread would be a lot, lot longer than 'I won, I won'loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.0 -

An "I lost, I lost" thread?
These competitions have free entry routes so there is nothing to lose and as several MSE winners of big competitions this year can confirm there is plenty to gain.
It is a very cheap pastime with the possibility of winning not only cash but some prizes that you could not buy.0 -
Agree with mjm - all the ITV and GMTV competitions have a free email entry and many many people have won - myself included (£5k) so please dont dismiss something you have not even bothered to look into.Thank you all who post.0

Vent and warning as far as I'm concerned. TV competitions are something of a rip-off, GMTV appears to be the worst not that I watch it much. They'll ask a question something along the lines of "How many heads does a human being have, is it a)One b)Twenty c)Susan Boyle" and then charge £1 a go to enter. The prizes are usually quite decent to encourage viewers to start texting but if they get say 100,000 entries at a quid a pop for a prize of £25,000 then they're laughing.
The OP had the right idea of entering for free on-line but personally I wouldn't bother given the number of enteries they're likely to get. As far as I'm concerned these competitions are just another form of idiot tax.
Some people are just too 'smart for their own good!
Last year I won almost £2000 with Real Deal on ITV. And I know of many other winners, not just on MSE but other websites.
It didn't cost a penny to enter, you are allowed up to 5 entries online for no cost at all.
ITV competitions are definitely worth entering!0 -

You lose time that could be spent doing more productive things. If you enjoy filling in forms then fair enough.
Some competitions are used to harvest personal information for marketing purposes.0 -

The competitions are worth entering if you win but I think the chances of winning are so remote. I'm sure other people spend countless hours entering these competitions and win nothing or very little in compared to time spent.0 -
Last year I won £4,000 worth of prizes including a bespoke gaming pc worth £1,500, £600 tesco vouchers, £250 bench clothing and a flatscreen tv to name a few. SO yeah it is def worth entering the comps that are free to enter. I have a baby so enter the comps when he is sleeping or when I have free time.
You don't have to fill in forms if you download roboform it automatically fills them in for you.
I view it as a sort of part time job and last year time spent compared to winnings worked out at approx £21 per hour so pretty good wage for something that is easy, fun and can be done on your sofa in your pj's!0 -

But surely that's just as patronising as warning someone that rain is wet.The OP had the right idea of entering for free on-line but personally I wouldn't bother given the number of enteries they're likely to get. As far as I'm concerned these competitions are just another form of idiot tax.
And what's wrong with that?0
