On switching on my laptop, it says "No bootable device- insert boot disk and press any key "
A friend of mine says that the hard disk is gone? Is this true? The model is Toshiba satellite L300-13R.
I cant see my bootable disk.
Any help? Cheers

not sure on that model but most Toshiba laptops you can take off a cover from underneath and check the hard drive is still connected.0

check harddrive hasnt come loose first then reboot on your screen as you boot it should tell you how to enter the bios with a key say escape as example just keep pressing said key till you enter. then once inside you should be find the registered drives eg. dvd drive and the harddrive listed in there if the harddrive is working it will be listed if not get a new harddrive hammer to the old one. then you will have to reinstall windows and your programs.0

"" No bootable device ""
- means windows can't find a bootable device, it doesn't mean the HDD is broken, just that you've screwed your operating system.
- it's a software, not a hardware errorDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Best option is to enter the Bios and see whats present.
On the toshiba you should be able to press F2 once the red toshiba logo has been. Then you will be left with a blue & black menu.
You should be able to use the --> key to scroll the menu across at the top to Bootable Devices Menu, where the order of devices to be booted listed. It might say.. (for example)
DVD/CD ROM
C: HARD DRIVE
A: FLOPPY DRIVE
If C: HARD DRIVE is missing from the list, then the HD isnt being detected.
The L300 should be a SATA drive so easy to check. If you turn the laptop over, near the corner you might see a square panel, just smaller than your hand with 2 screws (+) shape, you can undo these two screws, and flip the panel out. Then the Harddrive should be present, it should just slide out & in. The screws keep it in place.
You should be able to turn the laptop on, and feel the harddrive. You should be able to hear it spin-up.
Easy to change, about £32 delivered from eBay for a 200GB Harddrive. Will just need to put the DVD's that came with the laptop into it to re-install.
Had to do it to my laptop a few weeks back when SIL dropped it flat on its back.
Below - Toshiba Bios, you want to look at the Boot Menu.

The fivesome i saw in the boot are;
1) HDD (S1)
2) FDD
3) CD/DVD HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T40N(PM)
4) LAN
5) USB MEMORY0 -
Do you have the restore disks that came with your computer? Also, do you need to recover any information from the hard drive (such as documents, photos, downloaded content that you paid for, etc)?0

Ok, the Hard-drive is registering within the Bios, but is it any good.
I would now look at loading some form of bootable disk. This can be an old Win 98 or an modern day disk.
You want to be able to access the Harddrive to see if its any good.0 -

You need a boot disk. Do you have the restore disks that came with your computer? Which version of Windows do you use?0

I just got a Toshiba netbook yesterday and it didn't come with any restore disks. What would I be able to do if there was a problem? Should I contact the supplier and ask if they have the disks? I'm assuming they would say they haven't.0
