    An E46 318i is 0-60 in about 10 seconds which is about 1.5 seconds ahead of the '56 plate Astra 1.6.
    The 318i is no ball of fire for performance, but being the lightest weight engine you can get in a 3 series it results in the most nimble sharpest 3 series going short of an M3. The 318i engine is solid, you might need to spend a bit of money any suspension components within the 2 year period your looking at. Around £400-£800 should cover that.
    Nothing wrong with the Astra and the Mondeo is a darn fine car too.

    In all seriousness it is amazing the different reactions people have to different cars, i would say i think the opposite of most of the reviews posted on this thread, but it just goes to show their is no substitute for getting out there and having a go in one.
