Dead Pixel on Brand New Dell Laptop

Hi All,

Just got delivery of my brand new £700+ Dell laptop and when I turned it on I saw a big bright (green) spot on the screen - especially visible against a black screen.

Before I call Dell I just wanted to know my rights in this matter - I have heard Dell only fix if there are six or more dead pixels on the screen??

Any Advice appreciated

7 working days to return it from day of delivery - just call and arrange a return or replacement.
  • Hi OneADay,

Thanks for the reply - just to clarify - they will not be quibbling with me because it only has one dead pixel will they? I guess I am asking under what rights, law or policy will they take back the goods.

    Thanks in advance

As long as you are in the 7 day period, you are covered in law and they must take it back or replace it with something that is not defective.

Furthermore in the first 28 days of the purchase, you can quote sales of goods act, meaning the item must be fit for purpose - so after the first 7 days, they must replace it with something that is fit for purpose. In first 7 days, you can cancel the whole thing.

I once tried to return a pc to dell (which I still use since purchase in 2007). It was a bit of a pain trying to get through and arranging a return - I decided to keep it in the end (my problem was low memory and sluggish, had to upgrade memory myself). Explain the situation clearly that there is a dead pixel, they will have to take it back.

7 days is the distance selling regulation (DSR).

Under distance selling regulations you cna reject anything within 7 days for whatever reason, even if you've just changed your mind.

I don't know what Dell's policy on dead pixels is but if they won't swap it becasue of that just return it daying you no longer want it.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Thanks to everyone for the very informative replies.

I will let you guys know what the situation is in due course.

Try tapping or rubbing the pixel, sometimes this fixes it

Preferable press gently just over and slightly around the pixel with a clean microfibre cloth. NOT your finger!

would just send it back under there dead pixel policy if they refuse use the 7day distance selling regulations as you have changed your mind! but you will need to be quick! and get agreement on the phone not with we will need to assess it first routine then you are out of the 7 day period!
  • Well I spoke to them and at first they tried to fob me off stating that the industry standard for laptop screens was 6 dead pixels! I said that had I seen such a defect on a PC in a shop there is no way I would purchase it and that I could just as easily insist on my money back in accordance with the DSR.

After this they agreed to send someone round (tomorrow) and replace the screen. I am happy with this and fingers xrossed there should be no further issues.

Thanks for the help everyone - for some strange reason I always dread confronting people when I receive poor service like this but your advice gave me the confidence to fight my ground.

    Much appreciated and many thanks!
