I dislike the way free school meals are assessed.

However, I'm kind of baffled that someone can bemoan a system that allows them to maintain a family for two years while they build up a business and earning virtually nothing!

What on earth would you have done without tax credits and yet you feel hard done by??
  • Oh yes, I found out about that stupid rule when my partner died and my daughter was still at secondary school. It really used to incense me because like a previous poster said, your income could still be as low, or in some cases, even lower, than other families who are on benefits and can get the free meals. The criteria is unfair.

However, I am sure that I heard somewhere that this rule is going to be changed and that you will be able to get free school dinners if you are on wtc but below a certain income. Just wish I could remember where I heard it.

sadly i've been doing this for a few years now but still am not earning a lot of money - i write and do art for books and magazines but its a hard business to break into.
It is a tough field to make a living off of. My SIL is also an illustrator and artist - but it certainly doesn't pay the bills for her and the four kids. She has done numerous part time jobs to ensure an income - usually working in art stores, doing portrait parties - you name it. She found it very busy when she did get a job to do an illustration - and had to do careful time management to meet deadlines. She is now doing 'art therapy' in schools - and her only qualification is that she is a natural and self taught artist.
It'd be great if we could all make a good living off of what we enjoy doing, but sometimes you have to be realistic as well.

This is what is happening in some parts of scotland just now, I qualify for free school meals for my son even though I get WTC and because my income is below a certain amount.

Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.
