Refused free school dinners

  • Do people realise that WTC can be used to buy your children's school dinners?

The WTC is there to support those on a low income with their day to day costs.
School dinners is a day to day cost.

Could a BG start merging all the free school dinners threads because the same replies are given every time.

Why can' we get it? Because you don't meet the criteria.
But I have a lower income than them next door and they don't even work. That means they don't get WTC but you do.

i think i need to be more pushy and try and sell more stuff, trouble is i worked very hard to get my degree just to find there were no jobs :( which sucks!

just found out my neighbour who works for an employer who gets both working and child tax credits gets free school dinners :(

If that's the case he may be committing fraud as he should not receive WTC & free school dinners for the children.

The only exception to this is if the Local Authority have a more generous criteria than the basic eligibility rules. Although I doubt this is the case if you are not receiving free school meals and he is a neighbour, so living within the same local authority boundaries.

I tried to say something similar on another thread but it did not seem to sit very well .

To be fair though, it should be based on total household income from all sources, as sometimes getting WTC doesn't mean you are any better off than those who's sole income is benefits only.

For example, a few years back I was a single parent and my total household income from wages, child benefit, CTC and WTC was around £10K.

Theoretically a family with £14K worth of benefits who did not work would get free school dinners, even though they had £4K more coming in than me.
Here I go again on my own....

If she gets wtc then she isn't entitled to free school dinners-maybe she lied but I would think she is likely to get found out. She may be lying about any part of what she told you however-some poeple do that for some strange reason, maybe to wind other people up or make it seem they have 'one up' on them.

I can't see how she will be able to lie as you have to submit your CTC award which also has your WTC details.

Alot of people also say things to make themselves look good or as a way to put other people down! So its likely the neighbour is doing this.....

i'm always working (writing tutorials / digital art / painting ) i just don't sell a lot. without WTC i'd be down about £80 a week.

Most of the artists I know (whatever their discipline) have paid employment to supplement their chosen profession, whether that's working in the archives at their old college or driving a taxi while building their reputations and customer bases. Did you not get advice from your college or a mentor before going self-employed? Would it be possible to go back to them for further advice?

No, because the basic criteria is UK wide.

The only difference at present is that some local authorities are providing free school meals to more than just those who meet the basic rules.
