Things to do and places to eat in Scarborough please?

Hi,

We've just booked a weekend in Scarborough in mid-August, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend either any places to go / things to do whilst we're there, and also any good bars / restaurants.

Best and cheapest thing to do in Scarborough is feeding the Squirrels in Peasholm Park.Get there early enough before everyone else has had chance to feed them and they flock round you.

50p for a bag of nuts from the little shop across the road and it keeps the kids entertained for a couple of hours, they will take the nuts out of your hands but be careful their claws are sharp and some can scratch a little bit.

As for Filey hot chocolate with cream, marshmallows and a flake from the kiosk on cobble landing go down a treat

stupideejay - just myself and my husband, both 27. Evening-wise we like going out to a nice restaurant and then a smart bar - not into nightclubs or loud brash places iykwim In the day we're up for anything - walks, activities, places to see, shopping...we like all sorts!

Although I have not been for a year or so, I always used to go to the Chinese on North Marine Drive (Kam Sang Restaurant). Their buffet was very nice and reasonably priced.

If you fancy something more laid back and less 'seasidey', then try Cober Hill at Cloughton (get on the Whitby Rd) and you will go through Cloughton - about 6 miles N of Scarboro'. Lunch runs to about 7.50 for 2 courses - but there are fantastic grounds for walking/playing - and the heritage coast is just a short relaxing stroll away - dramatic scenery - enjoy!

Remember to go up Olivers mount (where they hold the bike races at certain times) at night and look down on both the bays ,the castle,the hotels etc. a walk on the South bay you can walk along to the clocktower and see the blind garden (the plant labels are in braile and used to be fragrant although I havn't been there for a while) and then walk backalong the front which hasn't changed much since Victorian times. Night time is a good time to walk below the Castle and see the old part of town such as Paradise where I believe the playwright Alan Aykbourne lives and the Bronte Grave at St Marys church. The restaurant on the front called ASK is good their menu is on the web but they are very busy in the summer and its best too book, theres a lovely (takeaway)fish and chip shop opposite too.
The moors are not far away as are the wolds with lots of lovely walks. The fish and chip shop Richard Whitely used to go on about is in a village called Wetwang not too far away (and yes he used to go in there.)
If you want to go fossil hunting go to Boggle Hole take a lovely walk down the hill past the youth hostel building and roam the beach. A trip out to Eden camp is another thing to do if you fancy a day trip.
Hope this gives you some ideas and of course you can swim in the sea for free although it can be a little bracing!!!

There's a free festival; (kids welcome) from 17th- 20th in Scarborough with a free cinema film set up on beach and live music over the weekend. I'm going and taking my 4 kids camping at a loca sight-£15 per night x 3. Should be a good few days total cost £45 (and food/petrol) for a break for 5 people?

julieboo - thanks for the tip. We just happen to be going from the 17th to the 20th so for once we will be in the right place at the right time Have looked on loads of Scarborough web sites and not seen this advertised, so thanks very much!
