Oh, whats a millennium or three between friends! This course seems to be interested in the history of economics at the moment, with quotes from Adam Smith, and claims to not subscribe to any one school, I have my doubts though that it's possible to be completely neutral in economics. Or if it is, then it'd turn into a 'history of economics' course. I did breathe a huge sigh of relief though when it said it doesn't cover econometrics!

Pap, please don't go, and don't give up running if you enjoy it and want to carry on. I'm almost 100% certain nothing that was posted was aimed at you...

    Hi ya Katsu!

    How was Scotland?

It was nice to have a change - I loved the fresh clean sheets and TV in bed (I don't have a TV at home so the first night changed channels every 15 mins!). I also liked the thought that I was saving money not cooking my dinner - very MSE :D

The countryside was lovely to drive in too.

It did bring home to me that I've had a change, psychologically. I love having a reasonably demanding job but currently don't want a more demanding one with more time away from home and weekend working/even longer hours. I want quality time with my OH, who I missed.

It was also a shame to deal with the work issue I had gone there for. Quite tricky and some quite unhappy people.

You can see how neutral it is by seeing who it mentions. Usually Adam Smith, Richardo, Marx, Keynes. Will be interesting if Bastiat or Say (for example) make an appearence...

No, thats correct Katsu-apparently, I 'have' the job but am waiting for a position...on waiting list and have been there for best part of a year. Grrrrrr

How come the waiting list is so long? Are you tied to a particular geographical area?

    *Shudders at mention of Marx*

I really enjoyed freaknomics for highlighting what happens when you tie politics and economic too closely in terms of unexpected consequences but thats about as far as I get on such things...although I do know about Thatchers Drip Down Theory but more the idea rather than implementation...

Smith and Keynes so far from that list, someone beginning with Q, and of course Klein. I imagine at some point Friedman will make an appearance since he had such a huge impact on the modern British economic way of thinking.

The implementation? Remove all jobs, and all hope of jobs, from the North, make the south rich, and there'll be some kind of magical osmosis (eventually called 'EU grants') for money to go back to the north.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Well yeah but I'm a bit young to remember it directly is what I was trying to say so I have heard of the concept - which I think is bonkers but I havent heard anyone ever explain how it would be implemented in terms of taxing/benefits in detail if that makes sense - I'm interested in it because sometimes it feels like modern politicians adhere to this as well (on both sides) - it feels like only the lib dems are keen on redistribution and I wonder if there is a 3rd way as well or not...

Sorry I'm uneducated about terms and stuff but am interested in the ideas of economics on a macro and micro level :o
