TV "academia" is for the lowest common denominator alas. It's ladled on in bright primary colours to tell people how to think.

If you want the truth, or more accurately, the uncertainty - the internet is the place to go.

I agree with the first part, it's ok for getting people interested in subjects, but not much good when you already know the basics.

I prefer books to the internet though.

Books get out of date too quickly alas. Internet puts you on the bleeding edge. But both are better than TV.

Problem with the internet though is to get the real good stuff you have to pay subscriptions. And history research moves so slowly that books are good for two or three years at least. Journals are probably a happy compromise.

I said earlier (maybe yesterday) that my economics course is terrible because it doesn't seem to have been updated since 2003, so all of the statistics are hopelessly out of date, with reference to internet sales being tiny for instance. Now, that's a subject that moves so quickly books are obsolete by the time they're published.

Statistics certainly need to be up to date, but economic's main problem is that it is beset by fads all the time which tend to bury the past.

Derivatives are hailed as being all new, but the first futures were traded during the Greek Empire (i.e. before the Roman Empire rose to ascendency) - which is quite a while ago...
