My Oh works in central London, he commutes in from Crawley ( sussex) takes 38 mins on fast train) We have a mortgage, but average rents for a 1 bed in this town are £600, 3 bed approx £900. His salary is well over £50k, we wouldn't ever have a decent standard of living by living in west london, hence we are happy to make our money go miles further by living here.
He gets a train from a mainline station at 06:50am every morning and after finishing at 5pm with tubes etc is home by 18:40pm every evening.

It is an option that maybe you should consider living out of the city.

I dont know why you are moaning its better to have a roof over your head than nothing at all. There are plenty of people who dont survive on benefits and make ends meet because they have too!! You can try and claim HB if your on a low income but i would not say 27k is a low income and i would survive on this and I live alone etc.

I survive on 65.30 a week jsa its hard but i do manage, I have learnt to do without alot of things!!! I have been unemployed more than 8 months now and the job centre has asked me if I want to go on a training course at my nearest college to take a course in catering i said yes as its a new skill I be learning. Even at 42 im not giving up yet.

@unemployedandproud like I said in my opening post...poverty doesn't suit me and being on benefits to me is poor. I used to have a great job when I was employed.

Just be grateful that you can receive benefits, no ones likes to live in poverty but people do.sounds to me you dont appricate much in life, just thank god for what you have!!!

You say claiming benefits makes you poor so what!! at least your getting money ever 2 weeks. If you dont like it how it makes you feel then stop claiming simple as that!!!

Get over it!!! cause !!!! happens!!!

I'm living in west london...partly being its easy for me to get to central...the industry I used to work in and will hopefully be going back into requires me to work late evenings sometimes...I don't want to be too far out.

Errr... why do you need to live in West London (the most expensive part of London to live) to work in central London???? That's total and utter rot.

Good God - when I was last in London I worked in Hammersmith and had a one-bedroom flat in Bow in a well-known gated community for £850 a month. It had a mezzanine bedroom, double height living area, allocated parking place and was 2 minutes walk to the tube station.

Going down the scale I've also spent time living South of the river in places like Penge where a 1 bedroom apartment in a converted Victorian house cost me £550 a month and it was about 15 minutes into Victoria on the train.

There are plenty of areas you could live in London paying half what you're quoting and you'll have NO problem getting in to the central area.

  • Why not move to East London - it is much cheaper. Walthamstow is very good for transport - fast Victoria line tube to the west end.
  • I know 27K is not low income...what I’m trying to figure out is the transition to go back to either flat sharing or a smaller place. So that I won’t be struggling.

    I don’t know what a troll is.

If I have to try to remain here and pay the rent and try to live...I quite simply couldn’t afford it. I do not want to live on benefits...I’m in my late twenties, these are key years to move my career forward.

@marydot I do appreciate life. I appreciate the fact that I can claim, though having paid loads of tax over many years I think its ok to do so now that I need to. I just aim for my life to be beyond benefits.

As a woman in London, who had a job in event entertainment I cannot live too far out. Trains don’t run at 2am. Like I have said before where I’m living is not in a nice area (far from it) but the landlords charged what they knew they could get, I had no other options. Also If I were to go beyond zone 2 the transport costs would be ridiculous.

They don't run to any part of London at this time. It is very easy to get a cab to East London at this time and it is possible to get a place to live for a lot less than it is in West London. You can get a flat from about £600 and a flatshare for a lot than this. Have a look on www.rightmove.com .

Pinkhalo82, I dont' see it as helpful for me to carry on the discussion about cheaper areas of London for you as I don't really have anything to add.

What I would say is if you are getting LHA that pays the rent for you, then if you move into work, you may need to look for a property that is cheaper. TBH, I find £1500 pcm a very high LHA rate for a 1 bed so you must be living in nice accomodation.

If you are on JSA for 26 weeks or more, and end this having been on JSA IB or IS, you would qualify for a 4 week Housing Benefit Run On which would effectively ignore your wages for the first month.

As you have said, you have paid your taxes for some time but I also pay taxes and don't claim anything so that isn't really a pov that I concur with particularly.

I wish you the best of luck however
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
