What do I do when I get a job

After having spent the last 6 months living on different friends’ couches I finally had to get my own place. I could only do it by applying for housing benefit. I saved up enough from a Christmas temp job to pay the deposit.

I could only get a place that charged me the full LHA rate. The agencies seem to have told the landlords what the going rate is. All the places I visited I was pretty much quoted the same price. No landlord without an agency would even consider me even though I have great references from my old landlords back when I had a job. I only had a few weeks to find a place as my friends who I was going to stay with were evicted from their place.

The agencies were telling me I could still get help even if I’m working, but recent research online is telling me that if I do get a job again 25-28k which I was on...I’m in trouble.

My worry is when I start work again, I won’t be able to afford the rent....how do I move out? How do I save to move out if the rent is so high?

I have a few interviews coming up...and I’m wondering if that means I’ll have to be homeless or trying to convince some of my friends to let me sleep on their couch again.

Thing is I'm so broke right now...I couldn't even afford the moving van.

It seems like a vicious circle...get a job be homeless...have a home and be poor...poverty really doesn't suit me.

Get a room in a shared house or as a lodger arrangement.

  • I could ask the landlord if I could sublet the living room if I get a job.

By the time I pay bills, transport and rent I would have no money left on a salary of about 27k.

Maybe you need to look at the transport available to get to that job and relocate to a cheaper area, taking into consideration rent and travel.

In the meantime, find a shared house until you find your feet.

There are many people working for a lot less - they must manage somehow.
  • I couldn't find a landlord who would rent me a room in a shared house if I was claiming housing benefit. I couldn't convince a landlord with a lower rent for the same reason, my only option was to take a flat via an agency for at £1500 a month not inc the council tax I would have to pay, the bills and transport. 27k would only be £1700 a month...I would need to move, but how could I save up to move? I would need to work at least for a month to earn enough for a deposit, a month rent and removal costs.

I'm going to looking into renting out the living room, when I get a job.

I am in a cheap area...they're just ripping me off. this place is not worth that much at all...that's why they were showing it to so many people claiming...because they can get more money.

Well, to be frank, nobody in their right mind would pay £1500/month on rent. They'd move to a cheaper area.

What are the first parts of the postcode of:
    - where you're living now
    - where your job will be

Maybe people can suggest suitable areas to move to.

As for house-sharing, you can now look on flatsharing websites and give your reason for moving as being your new job/relocating. The sites where it's people sharing a house, not a landlord filling an HMO.

I think you're being a bit blinkered as to what accommodation is out there and where. Let others help you by providing the two relevant postcode areas.
  • @unemployedandproud like I said in my opening post...poverty doesn't suit me and being on benefits to me is poor. I used to have a great job when I was employed.

I'm living in west london...partly being its easy for me to get to central...the industry I used to work in and will hopefully be going back into requires me to work late evenings sometimes...I don't want to be too far out.

I was told by the housing people that I would need let any landlord know I would be claiming also in the case of flat shares. I have flat shared before and I've always been asked about employment, which up until now has never been a problem.

Right now I'm preparing for interviews haven't secured anything yet...only just moved into this flat...and spent everything I had doing so, but thinking ahead as I really want to sort out my current circumstances.

Can report the landlord for over-charging on rent? I really think its overpriced.

I don't think we have a system of "over charging". The price is what it is and you either pay it or don't. But, you have picked one of the most expensive parts of the capital to live in. There must be other areas that wouldn't be as pricey, yet still safe.
