im out of contract with them so not sure what is best

2 laptops in the house and son has an applemac in his room and his xbox which is on line
downloads mainly songs on itunes
we also have sky tv package
we have a iphone with 02 but that contract runs out next month and we dont plan to renew it

The main thing is not be without our broadband for ages if when we change to a different provider
we never use the land line at all dont even have it pluged in so dont need a free calls/line rental package

I know that i have to pay for my bt line rental still as cant get cable where i live so really want the cheapest broadband poss

we want wireless and want it to be as easy to get everthing set up as possible the main thing is not being days /weeks without internet

any ideas on what would be the best package would be appreciated as there is so many of them im sure ill mess up

Well, there is a guide on the best packages here:
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-broadband

You may well find that Sky are one of the cheapest, seeing as you already have TV with them (but Sky are not necessarily the best for performance).

It seems that you use the net a lot, so remember to go with a package that is either unlimited or at least comes with a high data allowance.

You can phone BT and ask for a MAC code. This should allow you to transfer to another provider without interruption. However, some of the cheapest providers use LLU (Local Loop Unbundling - they install their own equipment in the exchange). I think that there might be a short interruption in internet service when moving to one of those providers. It could also possibly be more expensive to move back to a BT-based provider later.

Most ISPs give out wireless routers these days, but you can always buy one at relatively low cost if they don't.

One other thing - depending on the provider, you might be able to get some cashback if you sign up through www.topcashback.co.uk

Broadband is exchange specific, so no-one can give you advice without knowing what exchange you are on.
Go to www.samknows.com, do an exchange search and look for the available LLU operators on your exchange-these will be the best deals.
Migrating by means of a MAC means that you will only get a couple of hours downtime.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hi -

Just to add to the above - using a comparison service like http://www.chooseisp.co.uk/ you can use your postcode/phone number to see which deals are available to you and then sort by price to find the cheapest.

    Hope this helps :)
