Having spent the last 2 days trying to sort this out while my other work was piling up at least its sorted;)

Scrub round trying to delte the Malware/Virus problem. Just load in his last "safe" backup. If he doesn't do regular backups, then re-install the OS from scratch and start again.

That wouldn't work though. The malware can write to the backups and other places as well.

Yeah thats what was paid for as I never scrolled down far enough to see the manual stuff:o

So far things seem clear and at least the Avira is working again now.

I will run a hijack log this tomorrow when the laptop returns to work and post here:D

My sister recently got this same one on her machine. When I did a little digging, I found a strange hidden folder under one of the user names under Documents and Settings. It was about 6 or 8 digits long and the name was comprised of letters and numbers. Therein lay the culprit executable. I deleted the exe and the folder. After that, I was able to get down to the business of removing the other crap.
