Changing from o2 to Virgin

We've had o2 for approx 16 months. Rang them for my MAC code and they want me to send the modem back, which I thought was strange?

Got my MAC and phoned Virgin as we're upgrading to the 50mb broadband. They don't want my MAC though?

Do I just write to O2 to confirm my cancellation then? If so, what address do I write to?

ETA: Thanks in advance for your help.

The router remains their property and they may request it back at the end of your contract.
A MAC is for ADSL migrations only, you are going to cable, so not required. Just give them your 30 days notice.

o2 have always had clear T&Cs that the o2 box is a LOANER and if you don't return it you have £50 to pay.

Simplest to phone and cancel the service (requiring 30days paid notice as macman said), and at the same time check they are sending you a big-jiffybag to Freepost their o2 box back to them in (remember to get a free certificate of posting at a Post Office so if there is any dispute over returning it, you have evidence of despatch).

Also, won't there be a cease charge, because the BB is being discontinued and not migrated.
    Move along, nothing to see.
