No Sound!!!

I've recently bought an Asus RADEON EAH4850 Graphics card (http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?prodID=B249410) and MSI S775 INTEL G31 2XDDRII-800 MOTHERBOARD (http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?prodID=B256617) but can't get any sound at all.

Apparantly the Graphics card supports an HDMI cable so I can get picture to my HDTV but it doesn't support sound (!!!) and I can't connect the motherboard to the Aux-in socket on my surround-sound DVD player via the green socket on the back of the pc and the red and white input sockets on my DVD player.

I've been messing about with it for ages and have no idea what to do next. I'm using Windows 7 if that makes any difference?

All help is very gratefully received!!

read manual that came with motherboard or ask lamda-tek
  • Manual is read, Lamda-Tek pretty much said the same thing. Plug it in and it should auto detect, etc, etc...

could be a faulty card or m/board. if it has onboard sound too, you could pull the graphics card and try that.
  • Will do, strange thing is that at times I can get sound out of the front 2 of the speakers when trying to set it up, so I know something's happening

Is the hardware detected and drivers installed? If you go into device manager (right click "Computer" then properties, click Device Manager) is there an entry for Realtek High Definition Audio under sound, video and game controllers? The motherboard uses a Realtek chipset.

The drivers are here if needed http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1832

Does the sound work at all with standard PC speakers or headphones?

There may be a separate sound output device installed with the graphics card driver - go to sound in control panel and check the default playback device. You may need to change this to the graphics card instead of the Realtek card on the motherboard. If there is no option, check in device manager to be certain that there are no devices that don't yet have drivers installed.

Alternatively, you may need to connect the motherboard's sound card to the graphics card. Your motherboard should have an internal SPDIF header and the graphics card might have come with a small cable to plug into it.

Why can't you connect the audio from the green socket to the DVD player's RCA jacks? You can get cables for a little over £1 on eBay to do this (although I'm not sure that you would be getting full surround sound). Does your DVD player have any other audio inputs, like optical or SPDIF?
  • Weird thing is, if I plug headphones into the motherboard they work fine (after clicking on the prompt saying it's headphones that have been plugged in).

The hardware seems to be detected and the most updated drivers are installed

I think you posted at about the same time that I just did, so I thought I'd just post again to make sure that you saw my previous message. I also just want to make it clear that there is no automatic pass-through from the motherboard's sound card to the graphics card's hdmi (when using a separate graphics card and not one that is integrated on the motherboard). So it is not surprising that you get sound from headphones, as that has nothing to do with the graphics card. You can only get sound through hdmi when the graphics card has its own separate audio (as I think yours does) or else a cable to connect to the motherboard audio.

I'll have to check the DVD player inputs when I get home, none spring to mind though.

    Cheers for your help
  • OK, but try the suggestion with sound options in control panel before bothering to look for additional audio input on the DVD player. I'm reasonably certain that you can fix it with that (although you might need a driver first).
