Hi,
My brother has just found out he is going to be posted Germany, four months into an 18 month contract with 02.
Just wondered if anyone had had any luck transferring a contract to a foreign network or getting the provider to suspend the contract for the time of posting?
Thanks.

I can't say for sure with O2, but when I was at Virgin Mobile their reponse would literally be 'tough'. I would imagine at the very best they may lower his tariff. I've never heard of anyone transferring a contract to a foreign network. Does he know anyone who could make use of the contract while he's away? Could he sell the phone and pay off the remainder of the contract? (Depending on how much his monthly tariff is, that could be quite expensive)
You might get some better advice on the Mobile Phone board.0 -
well i am deploying next month and asked them to freeze it which they are happy to do so i dont see that this situation is any different. All you can do is give them a ring to see what they can offer although with him only having it for 4 months they may want some compensation for the phone unless you hand it back also.0

There was a procedure in place for freezing O2 contracts when I worked there for those in the forces however unfortunately I seem to remember it only being applicable for those being deployed to a war zone ie Afghanistan/Iraq. IIRC this resulted in the phone being barred to both outgoing and incoming calls until the contract was resumed.
Well worth calling them and asking about it.0 -
It can be useful to have a UK mobile whilst in Germany, so he might want to ask to change the contract rather than cancel/freeze it all together.Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0

You can get an international calling bolt of for a small fee that'll allow him to call the UK from Germany cheaper.0

Germany has an O2 service, doesn't it? Might be worth seeing if you can go onto that.£2023 in 2023 challenge - £17.79 January0

Your best approach would be to ring up O2 and see what they have to say about it. If you say the right things I'd be fairly certain that they would be able to suspend your account for the length of your tour. Well, I'd like to think so any way!
