who is liable?

hi,at christmas i purchased a tv from a well know supermarket chain.tv cost =£250.00.After a six week period the tv is no longer working,after returning to the store was given a new remote control by a member of staff,which didn,t make the tv work either(hubby said from the off that it wasn,t the remote control).On returning to the store i am being told that i have to phone the manufacturer helpline etc.All i want to know if this is correct?Would have thought that my contract is with the supermarket after a short period of time?Any direction from anyone would be gratefully appreciated.

    Your contract is with the store you bought it from, under the sale of goods act, although it may be easier to contact the manufacturer and claim under the guarantee.

    The store is liable for the tv,don't be fobbed off,somewhere on here is proof of that
  • Thought as much.Manager of store is saying that it is company policy for me to contact the manufacturer.Sounds easy enough but really dont relish the hassle of it all.

    The store should phone them if you require them to. But it is easier to do it yourself, as they do it on behalf of the supermarket. Seems the staff there don't know, but hey...you buy a TV from somewhere their staff are experts on baked beans...you take your chances :D

  • yeah your right you do take your chances,but then again i bought it from the electrical dept where maybe i thought they had more knowledge than your average tin of beans.;)

    I'm sure they do, but it can be like banging your head against a wall. That said, when my phone from Tesco went wrong, I called up their helpline and they were rather efficient.

    What exactly do you gain by forcing the shop to phone the helpline rather than you?

    It's more likely to inconvenience you than anything.

    Well you save the hassle of dealing with different people. You don't have to pay the cost of those expensive helpline numbers I could continue..............
