you seem to be missing the point, the excerise was to reduce emissions in cars.
besides the scrapped cars generally get shredded and end up a new life as a happy sheet of sheet metal.
no, you've missed the point. the scrappage scheme was never about reducing emissions. it was designed to kick start the economy again.
if it was to reduce emissions they would have had incentives only for economical cars....work permit granted!0 -

There's Euro5 and then Euro6 Emission standards to meet, which doesn't just govern Co2.
im pretty sure euro 5 is here already but when euro 6 comes i think it will be the end of diesels. all they are doing is strangling the diesel engine with extra filters,cleaners,fluids. eventually it will be far to expensive to produce a diesel engine and certainly too expensive to run....work permit granted!0 -

Not quite sure that would happen. Audi claims to have a 'Euro 6' car. I think it will be a wee while before diesel is killed off. Golden age was late '90s and early '00 when some cracking diesels were out and long lived without fancy things.0 -

the euro 4 and 5's we have just now cost a fortune to get fixed when something goes wrong,so some more fancy emission reducing gadgets are bound to make it more expensive again....work permit granted!0 -
Some manufacturers are begining to realise thats its just getting to difficult to get diesel to meet new regulations - thats why BMW / Citroen / WV are bringing out low capacity high output turbo petrol's -0

diesel will return to being reserved for commercial vehicles. until electric vehicles fully mature....work permit granted!0 -
I don't think diesel's dead, as much as it's on it's !!!! from being far too costly!
It was only 4 years ago that it cost me £28 to fill my tank, back when diesel was 85-89p/ltr (and a good few pence cheaper than petrol). Yesterday to fill the same car with the same diesel cost £45 at 115p/litre! And that was after using petrolprices.com to get the cheapest in my area.
But then i come home to find my dad whinging about the cost of petrol, and that if it goes back up to above 120p/ltr he's going to give up the car and walk. Now, when there was the oil crisis last year, i was paying anything upto 145p/ltr for diesel! How can the government justify a 25p/ltr difference between fuel prices for petrol & diesel?????
And i have to agree that the article was pants anyway, because the car sales figures have been skewed by the scrappage scheme, which encourages the purchases of small petrol enginges, which will require a RFL and i know the most popular scrappage swaps round these parts were for brand new chevrolet matizs, every 17&70 yr old within a 5 mile radius seems to have one! A standard 1.0ltr petrol will cost £120 a year to tax!
Whereas if the scrappage scheme had been aimed at only "green/eco" purchases then all the 17&70 yr olds would be tootling around in polo bluemotions/seat ecomotives/anything with efficient/eco in the title, most of which run on small diesel engines, and will do 70+mpg (86pmg claimed in new polo) but these cars are tax free due to their low emissions. Now what would be the point in generating a massive demand for new cars that aren't going to provide the government with a decent tax revenue???? Especially when the majority of people using the scrappage scheme haven't changed their car in 10 years? If that person bought an eco scrappage car, and then doesn't change it for another decade, then the government effectively misses out on the £1200 it would have seen if that person had bought a bog standard 1.0ltr petrol car.
Plus the £4995 paid for the matizs/pandas/i10s etc simply couldn't be matched on diesel cars as manufacturers aren't prepared to swallow the costs of the diesel engine themselves.
I honestly believe that diesel will trundle on, because there isn't a mass produced petrol car that can do 100mpg, costs less than £10k, is free to tax, cheap to ensure, and DOESN'T look like a Gwiz. Yet the diesel/eco market is nearly there! :T Even the likes of BMW and Mercedes are pushing their "efficient dynamics" and "bluefficiency" ranges, Volvo have "driv-e" and Ford have "econetic".
With the electric cars taking too long to arrive and being too expensive to offer a real alternative, even the electric pioneers have pushed their diesels instead, like the Smart 4-2 diesel (83mpg & 86g/km co2) and the Mini "D"s. These eco ranges are filling the gap in the market between being trendy and being an eco warrior. For example the Seat Ibiza Ecomotive is a compromise model for someone who really really really desperately wants a Cupra, but knows it'll single handedly destroy the planet with one tyre-schreeching roar, but this same chap just cannot face the day to day lack of aesthetic appeal that comes from buying a Gwiz/th!nk/hybrid/etc. So he can still have his yellow paint, but can also sleep at night knowing he has not destroyed an acre of the rainforest with his purchase.
Diesel isn't dead, it's just not fashionable!!!! It doesn't have the celebrity endorsement that the hybrids have.
