windows 7 and canon laser printer

I've recently got a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and can't add my existing Canon LBP3000 laser printer. It keeps saying there are compatibility issues. On the Canon site they only have drivers for the 32 bit system and after googling the problem it seems I'm not the only one having difficulties. Anyone else got this printer and can give any advice how to get it to work with a Windows 7 laptop?

Don't think there are any 64-bit drivers. Get an old pc to run it or a new printer

Oh no! I checked Windows 7 compatibility with other Canon laser printers and there were 64 bit drivers available. But when I entered the LBP3000 it said "information coming soon". It's a great little printer and only a couple of years old (which I suppose is ancient in technology terms).

I realize it lists only HP Printers, but sometimes a 'universal' printer driver such as this truly is universal (although I have my doubts Lol). Maybe give it a go, and if any problems then uninstall?

Have you tried the Vista drivers instead? Might work with W7.
If not contact Canon tech suport and ask them if this printer will soon be supported.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Someone already has, in November 2009 - see post #8 http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/15142-canon-lbp-3000-64bit-driver-help-please.html

This could well be a growing problem, seeing as new (non-business) laptops now seem to come only with 64-bit Windows 7, usually Home Premium...

Thanks for all the suggestions. Macman: I looked for a Vista equivalent but they only have 32 bit - I've also emailed Canon to ask when they will update the drivers (I see from other queries they promised it by last December and now they are saying the first quarter of this year so I won't hold my breath). Busenbust - I've tried the HP Universal link but it didn't work. Spud17 - I'll try your suggestion today. I'm beginning to think it's a ploy to make everyone replace their printer!

I don't have Windows 7 but the same problem arose with the change from XP to Vista.
The solution for that is probably the same in W7.

Open up a window showing the driver software.
Right click on the install file.
Click on the tab marked Compatability
Tick the box marked "Run this program in compatability mode for"
and choose Vista or XP, whichever you previously had the driver running in.
Click all the way out and run the driver.

Can't guarantee it is available in, or works in, W7 but works every time in backwards mode for Vista.
