Can I switch from BT to another provider??

Hi,
I have just moved into a new home, the last person living here had internet and phone with BT. He has paid the final bill and now I want to get an Internet connection, but I need to get my line activated through BT first for line rental. Then I want to go with another provider that has a cheaper internet & line rental package, but can I activate the 12mth contract with BT and then go elsewhere? Will the new provider take over the contract??
Thanks for your time. Steve

If you take a new line rental contract with BT then you'll only be able to get broadband and / or a call plan from another provider.
If there is already a working BT line in the property - can't you just go to the provider you want to get line rental and broadband with to re-activate the line?0 -

The contract is with you and BT. If you sign up with BT and switch your line to another provider then BT will charge you for breaking the 12 month contract with them.(or 18 months depends on what the offer is)
As Dylan says your chosen provider should be able to connect you up with no need to involve BT Retail.
You can connect to BT for line and switch your calls (as long as you dont have free connection offer and need to make the 10 calls a month with BT)and get broadband from another company as this keeps the line rental with BT. After 12 months or 18 months you will be free to switch your line as you will no longer be in contract with BT.0
