Can you run a full disk check?Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
- Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
- Click Properties, and then click Tools.
- Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
- Use one of the following procedures:
- To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
- To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
- To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.0 -
The dreaded death tick !
Not an if but a when !
All drive die [ MTBF ] when they are made at factory level they have a number of spare tracks built in.
As a sector dies it's quietly re-allocated a-n-other sector to inhabit.
This works till all the spare slack is taken up then you lose the lot.
If you know how to low level the drive it may help but really its :
- only a question of time
- get your important stuff off [ and check it's really there ]
- it's probably a Deskstar brand is it ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. It's actually a Maxtor.
To tell you the truth, i'm just gonna get another hard drive. As it seems this one is definitely on it's way out.
I've had the computer for about 6 years now, so i guess it was bound to happen at some point.
Thanks again for all the advice given.0 -
Agreed about the scandisk
Open cmd prompt and run scandisk /f and let it fix errors, if it's bad sectors you may just get away with it, but tbh it looks more like a failing HDD. There was another post where it may be a faulty controller board but you'd have to replace it to test withOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

Got rid of the knackered old Maxtor hard drive.
Now have a Western Digital Caviar Black 640gb (one of the best HD's around, i've been told).........very happy now! :T
Thanks again for all advice given.0
