Thanks Niv, really helpful information in your posts. We must look into this further and find out what is the best option for us. We did have an insurance company out as we had noticed the water penetration after severe gales but he said the damage was mainly wear and tear and we couldn't claim. It was at that stage we found out the roof was full of large cracks and some of the roofing had broken away from the bolts.

Perhaps it might break loose and fly off somewhere during the next storms:rotfl::rotfl:

    Hi,
We hired a contractor (just a handyman, not an asbestos team) to remove the sheeting and then wrap it in plastic. Eastwood then supplied a covered skip for the asbestos and took it away. We also needed documentation for the council relating to the transport of the asbestos and they provided this for us.
The problem we had was that the contractor said it would take 2 days and then finished early, so he wasn't there when the skip was due to arrive and had wrapped the sheeting up in one big pack. My husband then had to go through and separate the sheeting as it was too heavy for us to lob into the skip.
Eastwood were by far the cheapest and very easy to deal with.
    Cheers,

sasugar, thanks for the information. It is helpful to know about options that are available. The roof really needs to be removed and a new one fitted due to water leaking through all the cracks, especially will all this horrible weather we are having! Did you by any chance find out if your builder needs any special requirements/certificates to remove the asbestos roof itself?

Although I have no information regarding what certification is required to enable my builder to remove the asbestos roof from my garage, I am sure any reputable builder would be compliant. However, do be careful that you don't get ripped off regarding quotes to remove the asbestos from your roof.
I have been very fortunate as, I have two very strong nephews and they are going to remove the roof for me. I have found a company in Cheltenham that I can buy red/clear asbestos bags at £1.00 + vat each and also the whole protective gear needed at £13.00 + vat per person. The company will accept payment over the telephone and delivery is next day. I will then contact the company I mentioned in my last reply, to come and collect and dispose for

Your local authority will take the asbestos if you double wrap it in polythene (free from a carpet shop!)
Up to a certain level it's free - then quite a high charge.
Although it's likely very low level risk, protect yourself if you diy it. I used disposable overall, gloves, mask, goggles, old shoes and socks. All clothing etc disposed of followed by a shower!

I did this with my garage roof and took it to the tip. I was charged about £40.

Sinders. 1 small piece of advice to add to Nivs last comment. If you are going to take a sample yourself, bag up, and then double bag. Please use a little common sense and hand deliver to a reputable Asbestos Analytical Company. Its never nice opening up an envelope containing a bag with white powder or something in. Some Analytical companys may allow you to post and clearly display "sample Enclosed". This will then allow for the sample(Envelope) to be opened up in controlled conditions.

At this precise moment in time there is no requirement for any special licences etc. for any Tom !!!!!! or Harry to remove your old asbestos corrugated shed/garage roof. The only legislative requirement is that the company/person is a registered hazardous waste carrier. Hope this helps.
  • Dont thinks there's any grants, you could try doing it yourself and taking it to your local tip but they will only take one small amount each visit & that needs to be double bagged.
We used a company that we found on google called Asbestos Safety Ltd and their price and service was very good. If its of any use to you their contact details are:

    Mob: 07873 274067
    Office:01246 701246
    Web: asbestossafety.net
