    Hi Sindersoot,
this maybe of interest to you.
I want to replace my single garage roof which is made of ASBESTOS, and have had a company come out and to look at it. The quote I was given was £1,890.00. When questioned why it was so expensive, I was told that it would cost approx £850.00 just to remove and dispose of the asbestos. I have today, contacted my local council ( Stoke on Trent ) and they told me that the council will provide free red bags and will dispose of two bags of asbestos free. They also gave me the telephone number of a company called Alsagers Contractors on 01270 884296 for a quote for collection and disposal. I have just telephoned them and the quote is £100.00 for collection and £30.00 for disposal. This is excellent news for me as I will now ask my builder to quote me for removing the roof and re-fitting a new one. It has made me aware what I can expect to pay for a new roof and removal of the asbestos. Hope this helps other people with the same problem. I am a woman on my own so maybe the original company thought that, I might be a bit thick.

sasugar, thanks for the information. It is helpful to know about options that are available. The roof really needs to be removed and a new one fitted due to water leaking through all the cracks, especially will all this horrible weather we are having! Did you by any chance find out if your builder needs any special requirements/certificates to remove the asbestos roof itself?

    Hi Folks,
Be aware that some councils only take asbestos away if you tell them that you removed it yourself. Once you mention that you hired a contractor/builder to remove it they will say it is the responsibility of the contractor to dispose of it and will not come and pick your asbestos up.
So we learned the hard way.
We found Eastwood to be very reasonably priced for asbestos disposal.
    Cheers,

The problem with our garage roof is that there are number of large cracks on some of the sheets which obviously means that they are likely to break up when being removed. Not sure how safe asbestos is when in a damaged state due to fibres, etc.

Thanks, that's good to know. Did you use an asbestos contractor or a general builder/contractor to remove the asbestos? Did Eastwood provide the bags to put the asbestos in for disposal?

Why does it need removal? Is it badly damaged or are you making modifications to the building? If you want to remove it simply due to the material it is I would simply suggest painting it. I used to work as an asbestos analyst and can tell you that asbestos strippers are not the tidiest of guys (but you gotta love um ;))

The asbestos sheeting has a number of large cracks in it and is letting water into the garage hence the reason we need to change it. It is the fact that the asbestos is damaged that we are thinking we will have to have it professionally removed. It is a worry to learn that the asbestos strippers are not the tidiest of guys, I thought that was the whole point of paying for a professional so that the sheeting, dust, etc removed under safe conditions.

Are there any grants available to assist with financing the removal of asbestos?

Our garage roof is asbestos corragated sheeting which we will require to have removed by an authorised asbestos removal company. Does anyone know of a reputable company in the West of Scotland?

Are there any particular things we should be looking for when employing an asbestos removal company?

Also, can anyone recommend a good replacement for the corragated asbestos sheeting, don't particularly want anything like plastic type sheeting due to wear and tear and bolts breaking, etc.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

if you can look on the top of the corragated roof sheets, on top of your garage. you may find imprinted in the top of the roll, the name ETERNIT, this would indicate that the roof sheets are a cement based product, and contain no asbestos. you can reroof the garage with the same product. available from travis perkins builders merchants.

You would be shocked at some of the professonal jobs I have had to inspect. Anyway moving on. A poster above said it will be white asbestos, 90% of the time for corrugated sheeting that is correct however Blue can be present in this type of sheeting too.

Removal by yourself is quite easy/legal and safe however. Just take care. I would empty the building (garage right?). Wear a half face mask with a P3 filter, full disposable paper suit (forget the specs sry). You can also buy paper 'booties' to cover your shoes. Wetting down can obviously help however the asbestos fibres will be trapped in the cement, its only where you break the material that causes greater issue or areas of exessive weathering. If you can unbolt it and remove without further damage, the mask and disposable suit should surfice. After removal I would thoughly clean the garage floor , an old hoover would be great (I personally wouldnt want to use the one I use in the house) then once cleaned, clean again with water and mop.

Normally household wate recycling centres will accept domestic asbestos waste but it is worth contacting them to ensure they do. You may however not like the idea of transporting it yourself.

it is always best to double wrap the asbestos waste.

Although some of this may sound quite alarming, please dont panic, this sort of material is by far not the worst out there. It is really not too bad to handle but if yuo were to drop a sheet you would be glad of the mask and suit etc.

EDIT: If you are not 100% sure the material is asbestos you can get it analysed by a lab for around £20. You would need to double bag a small sample of the material fo lab analysis (food bags with the sealable top are fine for this).

edit 2: clearly I am not good at editing posts rofl.
