T-mobile not accepting cancellation in writing

I wrote to T-mobile on the 21st of January giving them notice that I wanted to cancel my contract on the 19th of February when it was due to expire. I've just received a letter in the post today saying that they do not accept written cancellations and I have to phone them giving them three weeks notice.
I've checked my contract and although it says you can phone them to cancel I can't see any mention at the moment of them not accepting written cancellations.
I'm also concerned that by having to give them three weeks notice over the phone that this is now going to take me past the date when my contract is due to expire and I'm going to have to pay to get out of it.

Just phone them confirming your letter, ask why they don't accept written confirmation of cancellation and then ask if you can include the verbal answer you get, should they not agree the date you want to cancel (which I assume is at the end of the contract) in your letter of complaint to the telephone regulator.
You can,of course, ask for a PAC code in your call and you can PAC out to another provider - PAYG if you like - to coincide with your contract end date.
If you are correct, it beggars belief!0
