Exporting data from a broken netbook
Comments
-
if you have a monitor you can use, there is a way to do this without buying caddies or anything.
1) open a Skydrive account (free) this gives you 25gb of storage space, in the clouds
2) upload your data from netbook
3) either leave data in "the clouds" or download to a pc of your choice
I tried this Skydrive out about an hour ago and it works fine and is easy to use, go to http:www.skydrive.live.com. If 25gb storage is not enough you can get another 50gb free at adrive.com(free again), not tried that one though
ermm.... did you read the OP's post?
If he can't see the screen how is he to create an account at Skydrive?!?!
we need to know the make and model of the netbookLaters

another guess might be they are not that bothered since no further postings since original.0

setting up network shares blind is a neat trick.!!

On Windows XP the keyboard shortcut to open Run Command dialog box is Windows + R. You can then use the XCOPY command to copy your files.0

You are making lots of assumptions, plugging something into a router doesn't make the hard drive accessible unless you have setup file sharing, setting up remote access and screen sharing has the same problem, impossible to do blind.!!

I also provided a link to sources explaining how to achieve the OP's objective by means of an Ethernet cable if sharing had not been set up on the netbook.
That said, if we assume for a moment that the aforementioned 'netbook' (if that is indeed what it is) is running Windows XP SP3 using default settings, could you please briefly explain how one would gain remote access to the data stored on it?0 -
Brenda,
I haven't quoted anything.
Your assumptions are:
They have access to external screen, vga port and monitor lead.
Windows workgroup and file sharing is setup
Software Firewall is either off, or has exclusions for file sharing.
I'm illiterate because I didn't start a sentence with a capital letter.
I don't know where the Shift key is.
If out of the box XP/linux had file sharing setup, then anyone on the net could start hacking ports and stealing files with a password cracker (if they weren't using a router).!!

I'm with cloud on this one (partly because the OP never said much in the 1st post and secondly most people (who aren't good with IT) don't know what a workgroup/file share is or how to set one up)
say for example it turns out that the graphics chip has stopped outputting video to all devices, then setting up a network share blindly isn't going to be much use as you can't see the options (or commands you type) on a screen so it would probably be easier to take the disk out and put it in another machine to retrieve files that way.0
