O2 new customers charged a deposit

I signed up for a 24 month contract with O2 for an Iphone last week. I chose O2 because of a small discount from work. However I had to pay not only for the phone but was charged a £225 deposit which will be credited back to my O2 account and not my bank account in three months. Basically I have just paid for about 9 months in advance. I have a great credit record so it couldnt be anything to do with that - has anyone else come across this, or did they see me coming?

Not heard of this for non-credit rating reasons. Usually they require a deposit only if your credit rating is not up to scratch.

A deposit is down the the credit check not being favourable as jclegs says.

most networks do this (if not all).... its based on you being seen a low credit class customer. If you think this is not the case, you should find out your credit score from experian or equifax. I'd just be happy you passed as many just get declined which is quite frustrating. It shouldn't happen again in future contracts as your score will be higher next time.

it happened to me a while ago when I was at uni.
  • i got exactly the same. but my deposit was only £100. i received it back tho. u can choose to have it credited to ur account or they will send a cheque. be aware though that ull need to contact them if u want the cheque as theyll automatically credit ur account
    hope this helps

This happened to my daughter because she'd just moved into a new build property and wasn't on the electoral roll. It did get credited to the account without having to chase it up.
